There is an assumption there that The People know best, and that is clearly not always the case. Although the logical result of acknowledging that is a less appealing option than the democracy that we now have, which was fought for by some terrific men and women and ignored by the majority of Brits who cannot be bothered to vote.

They don't vote because they don't won't the politicians that are standing
Which I understand, but not voting is a ridiculous way to affect change! Someone who is standing will get in whether you vote or not, so why make a mockery of all the people who died and suffered to get you a vote? Your vote matters, even if the people up for election are eejits. Nothing will change without your vote.

2 points here;
i actually agree with paulw on the cleggy view
but he actually did labour a favour
it would have been an even bigger disaster than this cobbled together govt(if thats possible)
bern;
so whilst you have a point over voting
if none of the above are who you want exactly then who do you vote for?
ALL POSTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL VIEWS
The point is to use the vote anyway. If a Monster Raving Loony candidate was fielded here I rather suspect I might vote for them. Waste of a vote? Perhaps, but sending a bit of a message and not trashing the memory of the people who enabled me to have a vote in the first place. Picture this: a bunch of unelectable eejits intent on shafting the electorate stand for election. We don't vote. They get in. Wait a minute.......................

bern;
taking the logic of your argument
a few of you vote for the monster raving loony party
labour still gets in
but with 27 protest votes
could have an affect

Not really Keith.
What it means is the public are not content to give any party a complete mandate.
It makes the party think twice or compromise. You have to get on with it.
If it does not deliver I personally reckon you should sever quickly, deliver a manifesto that delivers reality without political excess.
The majority of the tax paying public are not fools.
What becomes a problem is when the benefit receiving public become the majority.
That's the time to leave the country, but not to Greece or Portugal. Spain is different it is not their public sector that is the problem but the private sector banks who are overborrowed.

bern;
you appear to say that following most of conservative posters and thats just fine.
understandably most people go out of there way to disassociate themselves from the tories(except of course the activists)
but we see on here a lot of luke warm, and other types of conservatives.
you dont often see people doing the same with labour.
but there you have it
as i keep saying its what makes the forum

Keith, will you stop trying to put me into some sort of political box? That is partly what makes politics so unbearably dull for younger people and people with an iota of free thought. There are many different ways to move politically forward, and thinking around corners and with a degree of innovation is part of that process. To be constantly put into a box and labelled is very irritating, and very misleading. It isn't just about me, it's about people finding themselves shoved into a handy pigeonhole because that makes it easier to trivialise them or their politics. It is a lazy way to think.

Just for a little light relief i bring you the Monster raving Loony Party 2010 general election manifesto:
1. Health & Safety: We propose to ban Self Responsibilty on the grounds that it may be dangerous to your health.
2. M.P's Expenses: We propose that instead of a second home allowance M.P's will have a caravan which will be parked outside the Houses of Parliament. This will make it easier as flipping a caravan is easier than flipping homes
3. Eurofit: The European Constitution which will be sorted out by going for a long Walk. "As everyone knows that walking is good for the constitution"
4. The speaker in the House of Commons will be replaced by the latest audio equipment
5. To help the Israel/Palestinian Problem, we will get rid of the old road map, and replace it with a new sat nav instead
6. European Union: It is proposed that the European Union end its discrimination by creating a "Court of Human Lefts" because their present policy is one -sided.
7. Education: We will increase the number of Women teachers throughout the education System as we are strong believers of 'Female Intuition'
8. Immigration and Population: I propose that we cap the population of this country. We have too many people for such a small country, so we will Cap the number of people residing here at present rates (approximately 63 million, give or take 10 mill ) on the basis of one out, one in (excluding Births).
Regarding Immigration... Any Person who can prove that they or their descendants emigrated to the U.K before 55 A.D can stay. All the others will be repatriated to their original country. (Well we have to draw the line somewhere)
9. We will ban all forms of Greyhound racing. This will help stop the counrty going to the dogs.
10. Afghanistan, Iraq and the War on terror. Theirs nothing funny about this. however as we have not found any taliban terrorists in Derbyshire. Our Soldiers can all come home now.
You can see why I like them............
