Further to what Reg said in post 17 my former neighbour served in the army like his father before, was in the Falklands in 1982 and in his own words "I'm not a nasty bloke but we had to do some nasty stuff". No prizes for guessing what that entailed - he thought it hilarious when the flag issue arose in the local paper as he never fought for the flag or the queen but shoulder to shoulder with his mates.
Incidentally he never goes to reunions or anything like that, just moved on in life.

I regret taking the bait on this subject as it was not really about the Somme Service.
This whole thread was more about having a go at DTC and those of us who dare disagree with their attitude, a great shame they choose not post on any of the other subjects on this forum.

Quite right Jan.Councillors have families some work Sunday's don't forget we are a Port Town .My Father in Law was in Burma during the Second World War he never went to reunions or wore a blazer with a badge. My Uncle was a prisoner of war for four years marched through Poland never hardly spoke about his ordeals .Some people want to forget and to keep going on about detail is not for a peaceful forum.Like Jan states these people who moan never post on other subjects.

Let me tell you, it is quite a daunting experience queuing in the Portrait Gallery of Buckingham Palace, being tutored by the Equerry to HRH on how to curtsy before meeting with HRH.
Why on earth do I need to purchase a "pin", I don't wear the medal I justly received from HRH, just saying! I display a commemorative sticker in my car purchased from RBL, as I say, no one can link me personally to my car, I am not one for wearing pins.
Rant over.
Thank you for reading.
Wowee! For someone 'not seeking fame or fortune' you would have kept that information from your friends on this forum but because we are special you allowed as to become overawed by your presence.
As for having to be taught how to curtsy, how traumatic that must have been, having to put one foot forward and bending a knee!

Seeing the word equerry reminds me of an incident a couple of years back in Capel when a new state of the art play area was being opened. All the dignitaries were there including Sue as District Council Chairman who was chatting to a lady that was also wearing a chain. Later we were both standing at the tea counter and I said love the bling, Argos is it? to which she gave a thin smile. Not long after an unveiling of something or other was happening and the announcer said something like representative of the High Lieutenant of Kent and amongst other things Equerry to Her Majesty the Queen!! Needless to say I looked around for a hole to hide in before being dragged to the tower.
