Where on earth were DTC Councillors at the memorial service on Sunday apart from Chris Precious who stood in for the Mayor & Alan Shirley not one of the others were there - no expenses to be claimed maybe ? Plus an upside down Union flag !!! Some of the veterans had travelled for 6 hrs to get here & then to be faced by an upside down flag. I also heard that they were disgusted with the position of the flag, stuck in the corner as though we were ashamed of it.

Rather a pointless question as no Town Councillors post here and my understanding is that DTC had no involvement with the flag.

Lyn must be feeling bored to post this now as the service was virtually a week ago so old news.

that is just a disgusting attitude Jan Higgins, you should be ashamed of yourself! How very dare you forget the lives lost at The Somme, I for one will NOT! Be it a week a month or a 100 years, you seem to have the same attitude of those idiot kids of the remain camp. If it wasn't for the sacrifice of these soldiers you any many others would NOT be here today, just saying!

It should be noted that the thousands of men that died at the Somme were sacrificed they didn't sacrifice themselves.

Was there an all ,must say the UJ upside down is not what you wanna see at a solemn service.Although those that are supposedly public servants shoulda been there.A old m8 of my wife and hubby stomped off with disgust ,they couldn't hear a blessed thing I had 3 grt grt uncles in WW1 ,one died at the Somme and 2 were wounded at Passchendale so a bit of respect don't go amiss

I just love the way Rita has chosen to react to my post but it is just what I have come to expect from people like her.
Where did I complain about the event only the late moans?
I am waiting for the new supply of the British Legion's special Somme pin, I wonder if Rita is.

What we have to remember is that last Sunday the excellent ceremony was organised by volunteers most of whom have full time jobs. I find it sad that people criticise without offering an alternative.

Howard Mcsweeney DTC have everything to do with the flag, they are responsible for the raising & lowering of it - when they remember it. They are also completely responsible for the ridiculous position it's in - stuck in a corner because to quote one of DTC,s Councillors " it spoils the view " They went against all advice by DDC by placing it in such a ridiculous position. I was present at that meeting.
I,m far from bored Jan Higgins so please don't be concerned about me.
Howard Mcsweeney were you present at the service on Sunday ? I think not. Please don't be sad & as for offering an alternative you have an extremely short memory.
Oh & by the way RBL are retired ex service men who no longer work of whom I have the greatest respect.
People like her Jan Higgins !!! Really how very pompous & how do you know it's a her ? Could be a him.

I was there actually can't speak for any Town Councillors as there only 4 or 5 that I would recognise.
Because people are ex services doesn't mean they are retired from work altogether.

to start,i didn't know that dover had loads of snipers about,if you lot want handbags at 10 paces do it some where else.
rant over.
protolcol suggests that any party would be preasant at the flag raising time,if flag gos upside down insist that its rectified there and then.if it carries on all partys should insist a meeting with dtc and thrash it out peasefully.

The Royal British Legion is open for anyone to become a member there is no requirement to be ex-services or retired, also Lyn you might be surprised to hear not all ex-serviceman are loyal patriotic citizens, most served queen and country to recieve a paycheck once a month and really couldn't care less about the national fervour for flag waving and hero worship.
The fact the flag was raised upside down would have been of great hilarity to soldiers as it very aptly sums up the battle of the Somme, in distress send re-enforcement!

They were told straight away that the flag was upside down. Brian Dixon please don't insult me by all that " handbags at dawn rubbish " I have every right to post on here if you don't like it don't join in & I do remember that you had quite a bit to say a while ago on D4D when you were friends with the Angry Grannies.
Reginald Barrington I can assure you that the old Soldiers did not find it hilarious that the flag was upside down, they were in fact angry & insulted - you obviously have no idea how they feel & I,m appalled at your opinions. I,m also perfectly aware of the RBL rules.

I can assure you Lyn I am very aware of how ex-servicemen feel and think, being one and coming from a family of servicemen, i also attend 3 Royal British Legion branches, not because I am ultra patriotic but because they sell cheap beer the reason most of us join!
You really don't need to speak up for old soldiers we are more than capable of doing that ourselves and we are very good at it, but to continually use any form of memorial as a stick to beat the town council is really unbecoming and does nothing but damage your cause.

I seem to have hit a nerve of Ms Higgins! Firstly, she does not know me and I don't know her. Exactly why I use a Username, I do not seek fame or fortune. Let me tell you, it is quite a daunting experience queuing in the Portrait Gallery of Buckingham Palace, being tutored by the Equerry to HRH on how to curtsy before meeting with HRH.
Why on earth do I need to purchase a "pin", I don't wear the medal I justly received from HRH, just saying! I display a commemorative sticker in my car purchased from RBL, as I say, no one can link me personally to my car, I am not one for wearing pins.
Rant over.
Thank you for reading.
