congratulations to ronnie and ann, best wishes for a successful year.

you are talking about elected mayors, our town mayors are usually non political appointees.

howard;
i think thats one of the misunderstandings
for me i think the time has come for political parties to withdraw from parish councils/town coouncils, its taken a time for me to come to that view, but i ont think they will.
so that means in this case the labour party as a political party put forward a labour nomination.
they are elected and selected as labour cllrs.
now if they choose(as some do) to go through all this, an then decide so all that i'v agreed to im going my own way, i find that part a little harder to grasp.
if thats the route they wish to go by all means do so but not under the illusion and using the labour party, then disown them once election is over.
but there you go

we seem to be at cross purposes keith, elected mayors have budgets for things like policing and other services.
our town mayor is mainly ceremonial hence the robes and bling and does unpolitical things like visiting schools, businesses, voluntary organisations and the like, generally giving encouragement and being helpful.
when introduced the mayor's political allegiance is never mentioned.

Indeed ceremony is the main purpose of the mayors - the full robes only being worn at formal occasions.
There is a big role for tradition and ceremony, it is part of our culture, something we should cherish.
I do feel that the mayor making has got a lot more elaborate than back in my day when we had Charter Trustees though.

My Congratulations go out to Mayor Ronnie Philpott and Deputy Mayor Anne Smith, they've got a busy road ahead following former Mayor Sue Jones 'a hard act to follow'
