"I find it strange that Sue should pick up on the food, when as Chair of DDC and many other positions on DDC she resided over lavish food each council meeting, where I'm sure tea and biscuits would have done."
Well said Councillor Sansum.

Said this many times before the post of a Town Mayor should be made by the public not members of the council. His or her roll should be just for ceremony,s etc they can then do away with the parish council which is called a town council, then the mayors office should be return to the place it should be that being the town hall. That way we would have a public Mayor and the person who is Mayor should hold that roll for 3 years making a big saving of public money. Yes he should have a standin in case the mayor is taken ill or there is two ceremony,s at the same time. But the stand in stands down after the 3 years s up.That would stop the way they run things now which is wrong where if you are the stand in and the next time round you are made mayor. We do not need a Parish council for the town it was only put in place because the reds at that time needed a platform to talk from.

I too find Sue's focus on the evening's menu as rather puzzling. There are those of us who remember Sue's horror when the then Labour controlled DDC stopped the annual garden party thereby denying her the opportunity to wear a big hat (her words) and balance a canape in one hand and a beverage in the other.

I cannot let those comments re food at DDC Council meetings pass.Food is provided at Full Council meetings as well recorded. Many Councillors have to attend after a full days work and.when some meetings can go on for over three hours and I have attended many when they are over four you need more than a biscuit. Both Ken and Keith have been away from DDC for some time now and they would see the food is not a lavish Buffett.Yes Keith I have attended many many functions and the refreshments vary.
Speaking as a former trustee of Age Concern for eighteen years I hope the grant was given.

All I will say regarding the food issue is this, have our esteemed councillors not heard of the take-away in their various forms if the poor things can not manage an extra couple of hours without sustenance.

Slightly off topic but the subject of food and drink at DDC meetings has arisen here. One of our local papers ran a shock horror story a few years back on the catering costs but when the figures were looked at closely it worked out at only few pence a year on our council tax bills.

Morning;
I have to say when I joined DDC probably 30 years ago it was only tea and biscuits quite enough really.
I don't object to the food as Howard says it is a small cost, but it did come in before Mr Watkins introduced all meetings finishing at 2200 latest so you only go maximum of 4 hours(often a lot less)
so maybe the need for food could be revisisted.
But getting back to the Title and other views;
At the moment I believe people still like to see a Mayor, now you could question the cost of this and maybe even come to another answer.
But don't think we are at that stage as yet.
I'm unaware of any platforms being made by any party for DTC as it hasn't the best name, and none of the 3 parties help in this respect.
Once DDC goes in with 2 other councils there will be a need for a local Town council.
I do recall Ken the garden party as I was one of the campaigners to get rid of it unless it was to help serious volunteers.
Just to have it to wear nice hats and have lovely food as Ken indicated was not a reason to keep it
locals did also complain about taking away Kearsney abbey whilst the function took place.
So I was glad it went.
There are better ways to meet locals and volunteers etc and at little or no cost

You were only jealous Keith as you never wore a hat.I met Ron Dennis ,,s PA and within a few days he met with Councillors To discuss relocation to Lydden. It was a working afternoon and I met many volunteers.I always took as my guest someone from the Community ,not like some
who never mingled all afternoon just content to eat strawberries. When the Labour group stopped this it was their worst days work .How else could you get so many volunteers together.
The same Councillors were very happy to wear robes and lay on a buffet at Mayor Making .Tnis also goes for Deal and Sandwich .

I believe the French are also great fans of Laurel and Hardy.

A deputy Mayor in France is very powerful, nothing like the purely ceremonial Mayor we have.
Hopefully Neil was very hospitable and took him out for a couple of sherbets.

A Deputy is still a Deputy however much power they have.

Jan,
Have to disagree on that one, the Mayor/Dep of Calais are very powerful in there Town.
Sue.
I don't do jealousy If the event was to bring together volunteers I would be all for it, but there are better and cheaper ways.
I'm not jealous of your wearing a hat, everyone to there own, I just don't wish to pay for you.
We have moved on from Kearsney abbey being closed off to locals whilst garden party went on with very expensive food.
Today the local awards recently at DTC is one of many ways to reward/talk to etc volunteers
Although Sue, we agree on many subjects, on the food we never will.
I just find it strange it was OK for you to swan around Kearsney abbey in your hat
with very expensive food
Yet it's wrong for DTC
Just saying.

Sue, the money was awarded but not without a slight aberration from one councillor who did apologise immediately afterwards and this was of course accepted without reservation.

Out of respect for Ronnie I will not comment any further on this post.Indeed Dover has lost a much loved person.I worked with Ronnie for two years. This had been a very sad week. There is a time and place for everything .
