I propose the motion that Mary Portas is A Good Thing.
While too many Britons appear to think and act like scavengers on some Politically Correct, Third World rubbish mountain, tamely accepting our post-industrial, apolitical malaise and cynically scheming to get one up in the abysmal new order, this feisty redhead wants to - shock, horror - rebuild our industrial base and our High Streets. A country that makes things and where people share a common purpose. Remember that?
There is a term in German for this outlook - "Die heile Welt". Before someone makes some predictable, lame Nazi joke, "heil" is from the same root as "hale", "neahtly" and "whole" - "The healthy world" would be an approximate translation.
Utopia? I don't believe so. To listen to some of our politicians you would think we lived in a world where there were fewer goods manufactured than 30 years ago. We do not live in a post-industrial world - just a post-industrial country, where the opiate of cheap credit and the financial services bubble masked the abject state of the country. past tense. The chickens are coming home to roost and we need to realise how much we have lost and act before it is too late.

Andrew I think 'heile' comes into English in this context quite well as 'holistic'.

In a town sense 'die heile Welt' also has a strong sense of localism which in Britain we have largely lost but still survives on the Continent, and is worth striving to revive.

And it is something that is being worked towards by a number of local organisations, namely the new Town Team (who are submitting a "Portas" bid), Dover People's Port, local community fora etc.

Just received this notice- very short notice - about the meeting TONIGHT:
Subject: PORTAS TOWN TEAM PUBLIC EVENT
Hello!
Dover Town Centre Businesses are putting in a bid to the government for one of the Portas Pilot pilots - money to help give our town centre a leg up! We would like to invite you to hear about our ideas and give us yours.
We are holding a public meeting with pictures and a presentation from 7pm on Thursday 22nd March at the Dover Town Council Offices at Maison Dieu House, Biggin St, Dover (by the War Memorial and the Town Hall). Please come and join us and give us your support. If you can let us know whether you will be coming that will be a big help in making sure there are chairs and tea/biscuits for everyone.
Thanks very much - and hope to see you there!
Louise Miller ( Hon. Chairman of the Dover Town Team)
