Well I guess DDCs ideas about decent shopping is very different to mine! The only place to buy clothes is Next, the only place for furniture is the Heart Foundation shop or am I missing something? Whilst the pandemic has been going on everyone has been encouraged to support their local high street rather than Amazon. I’d love to have been able to do that but I think my family may have been a bit insulted if I’d bought their gifts from B&M and Poundland. No disrespect intended but if you have a reasonable disposable income it would be good to have been able to support local businesses. So I shall continue to shop online for the foreseeable future. Tourist attractions are only part of what is required to encourage both visitors and local residents back into Dover.

Arthur you have pointed out one of the main reasons I seldom go into the main shopping area and have yet to visit St James.

Arthur
You are correct
For some years we have had a council that is not looking to a bright future
But looking more to getting it's wages for its top staff.
If the general public were aware it was paying £150,000 to the chief exec of DDC
And at least 5 other senior officers
Would you be happy when you raised the above issues only to be told there is no money ?

I get concerned about lack of transparency and lack of engagement with the people who live and shop in Dover- surely DDC can find a mechanism to ask for local opinion. Presumably those in DDC with high salaries live away from Dover and shop elsewhere too!
Perhaps DDC need to be asked how they intend to spend the money they’ll be given as part of the brexit transition process!

Slightly off topic but I see that the East Kent Mercury has sold off its office.
https://www.kentonline.co.uk/deal/news/office-auction-is-end-of-era-for-mercury-newspaper-239103/
Both the Mercury and the Dover Express are no longer the publications they were, happily regurgitating press releases from DHB/DDC without comment, and filling their letters pages with ill informed and generic letters from all over the county on topics such as Brexit and the Chinese Bat Flu rather than 'local' topics.
All staff will be plagiarising from home.
Investigative reporting disappeared years ago.
Unfortunately I suspect this will mean even more lunacy being done by our local council, reported after the event, if at all (see Maison Dieu cycle lane) and only mega scandals ( e.g. the likes of 'Sniffer' Rix) being reported via cut and paste from national titles.
Not good for local democracy. Not good for open government. Not good for accountability.

Frankly the latest iteration of the Market Square proposals are truly bloody awful, that arch thing is ridiculous and makes the space less not more usable for events - whichever numpty cam e up with this needs shooting. (vaguely reminds me of the time tunnel for those of you old enough to cast your minds back that far)
The proposed plans that were submitted with the application to the Coastal Communities Fund whilst not overly exciting at least created a decent event space and a vastly safer pedestrian area and to be honest did not need changing.

There are many people who shout there mouth off. But do not have the minerals to put there name forward. And help the town.

I have served my time as a Cllr ( not for Dover town as I don’t live in town) but as a parish Cllr. Would agree that it’s not an easy task. I think things go wrong when party politics become involved- there needs to be far more consultation with residents especially where large amounts of public money is involved. Coastal Community Funds - still public money. If it can’t be spent wisely then it shouldn’t be spent.

#49#50 You'll find Ross does a hell of a lot more than most of us on here have done or do, but I'll leave that for Ross to tell if he feels so inclined to respond to a woefully incorrect post.

Thanks Rag & Jan
Prefer my actions to do the talking rather than shout about it.
As far as Market Square is concerned I have had numerous conversations with both the Town Team and District Council about this and no doubt will have many more before it is finished

Oh and btw both major parties have asked me at various times to stand for them both at Town & District level and I have turned them down as by not being in their pocket I am able to "speak truth to power" etc.
