All that's needed to get rid of washing up liquid bubbles is a bar of soap - try it at home.

The only damage it does is to the filters which can be deep cleaned and re-purposed, the astronomical call out charges are where the expense is I suspect.

When astronomical call out charges are mentioned I think of a plumber arriving within the hour to stop a serious leak in a house not a company that fits it in around their schedule and can take over a week to sort out.

All you need to do is put an anti-foam liquid in the water beforehand, it's not rocket science. Then when some idiot puts Fairy into it, nothing much happens.

Things don't change very much back in 2002 the the late Peter Wells then leader of DDC announced the closure of the fountain because of the problem we are experiencing today and replace it with a piece of civic art. Feelings ran so high so the project was pulled. Here we are 14 years later but this time lumbered with a raised flower plinth.

Makes you wonder how Trafalgar Square and other prestigious fountains manage to keep going all year when Dover's gets turned off because of a few bubbles so many times.

The fountain is to be used for the Town Council to create floral displays for the Queen's birthday celebrations. It will be restored to its normal function at the conclusion of the events, I'm reliably informed.

That's not the impression given in post 1 Paul where the impression is given that there will be a new water feature as and when money becomes available.

Because once the pump fills with foam rather than water it runs too fast, overheats and burns out...

Thank you Ross for explaining the problems. Both my sons are engineers so I do know a little about these problems.Perhaps my responses are a bit too simple.I think the idea of a floral display is lovely. They worked n the past.

Sorry to be a damp squib about this but those various lumps of concrete will not entice me to visit, I prefer what is already there even without the lovely old fountain.

I've lived in Dover district for over 4 decades.
Every few years DDC spends a small fortune on Market Square plans to ‘create a more welcoming environment for local shoppers and a focal point for visitors’ or some other marketing bollocks.
(Remember the giant TV? )
You can't put lipstick on a pig.
(Yes, I know it's Coastal Communities Fund so it's government money they stole from me in income taxes and not DDC money stolen from me in council tax this time. So bloody what? It's still come out of my pocket.)
I'm seriously thinking of taking up painting and after ingesting even larger amounts of psychoactive substances doing a whole series of scenes of 'improvements' to various parts of Dover, complete with figures at a totally different scale, which never get built. There's obviously a market for them.

I had started a new topic on this. Bob is correct sometimes they are like little kids spending what originates from tax payers .The money burns a hole in their pockets lets tart the place up with this money heaven sent.Time they realised these ideas are not for us oldies and there are a lot of us about. We have all these wonderful Heritage sites which tourists love .Invest in these .Yes Some bright spark will say different budget .Time for more joined up thinking.Have any of you read the lengthy reports that are churned out? Half a page of reAding and the rest is gloss..

'Arch' is the right word to describe the attitude of DDC and DTT to Dovorians if they think we're happy to squat on low white walls gawping at part-buried giant nose-rings. What was the design spec, 'They're easily impressed.'?

I wonder what the next plan will be? How long before the white arches are coloured with graffiti? Do DDC really think this will entice people to a place where there are no decent shops?
