The people who made that decision should be ashamed of themselves. Their clearly backward thinking risk averse penny pinching head scratching bum scratching muddle headed criminally idiotic thought processes need a doctors attention. And we pay them? Give me my money back!

I will start with saying I like the fountain
However from an event staging perspective it is a nightmare, it is in the way it, it prevents good layout of staging, it makes access and marshalling problematic, it obstructs sight lines etc.
Also we all seem to be forgetting that generally it is only on for 5 months of the year and often is out of commission during that time because some numpty has foamed it or puked in it - clearly not a problem for a "bubbler".

All excellent points Ross.
The only thing that I would disagree with is liking the fountain. Clumsy thing, sits awkwardly and lacks any of the thought that was present in those once situated in front of the Gateway. Great pictures Paul ... although they did get to a pretty sad state towards the end.
The problem with our market square is that it tries to be many things yet achieves none. It echos a square (place) that was defined by a grain that has since passed.
Sticking a water feature in the middle does little to address this.

It was a better atmosphere when the buses went via Market Square onwards up Cannon St,and Biggin St .A bustling Market on a Saturday .No fountain but a raised flower bedand no outside drinkers .

There are but a few events in reality..but on a daily basis, on quiet sunny mornings like today, the people that live down here in this part of town walk by and like it

I would have thought that, when more people were assembled in the Market Square, the fountain would be MORE secure, not less !
Or is it just a health and safety matter which I don't understand !

compare the photo in post 65 with this one from today.
All set for the dancing and looking anything but festive.
What a crying shame it couldn't have been better presented
