Yes, quite. Although at those fare levels, we won't be inundated with backpackers, more likely it will appeal to affluent tourists.

I thought back-packers usually travel over-ground rather than on flights, so it probably won't affect them much.
The big point that will make a difference to us in East Kent and in particular Dover, is marketing - marketing what E.K. has and reasons to fly here.
With ferry-travel, approximately 80% of originating travel is from the U.K., if this is the same for local flying, then it will be of very little benefit to us; we must invest in promoting Dover and East Kent better - we can't just leave it to Kent Tourism and those individual sites/businesses that fund them.

Sadly I anticipate that this is another false dawn. There is no escaping the fact that the runway ends on the outskirts of Ramsgate and all flights pass directly at low level over the town. Any idea that a future major increase in traffic will be tolerated by the local populace seems quite literally pie in the sky.

There must be fewer houses and residents that would get upset from flights than almost any other airport though Ed.
Between the runway and the sea is a very short distance.
I really hope you are wrong Ed. |Today - 2nd. of April, sees the start of KLM flights.

Nothing would please me more than having Manston as a thriving airport but i don't live there and suspect that your favourite people, the NIMBY's, would have something to say about it.
I see no way that Manston will ever become another airport serving London as some have optimistically postulated. The KLM feeder service is to Schiphol which markets itself as London's fourth airport. Time to bite the bullet and construct one of the Thames Estuary airports, my favourite is the floating job.

I was at the KLM inaugral flight from Manston this morning.
The economics of KLM staying at Manston is 28,000 passengers a year requirement. Forward bookings at present are at 5000+ range.
It's the linkages with Schipol as a major hub airport and Manston's quick and speedy access that should sell it to the business sector.

The prices start off at £79 return. Even at the end of April there are still lots left at that price. Doesn't seem too expensive to me !

all covered on both local stations this evening, the general attitude of the passengers was encouraging with all pointing out the stress free atmosphere of maxton.

Try KLM's website.
I had a similar problem with DFDS earlier today. Got an online quote of £57.20 for a three-day ticket going out on the 1800 sailing tonight, when I clicked on the book now button it suddenly became £117. So we ain't goin'.

Those website ticket prices need sorting out - has anyone told KLM ?

Flying to Abu Dhabi tomorrow with klm from Manston. Return fare £30 plus £303 taxes each. Total £666 for the two of us. Beggars belief.
