B&Q are not going to return to the town.So one has to look to the future and sell Dover as a going concern.

OK, right, jolly japes aside, is M&S destined for Whitfield, thus sounding the death knell for its Dover and Deal stores?

Gawd!!! I do so hope that M&S stay here in Dover town, the town needs them, would be great to see them expand the store too. If a name like M&S move out of Dover then I'm afraid that the slippery slope will be accelerated
Jan, like you I used to be a frequent visitor to B&Q but I have never been to the Whitfield store.
Why oh why is this great town not looked after better by the people who have the power to do so?

Colette, a question we all ask, daily!
Another plea: Please sign up if you haven't done so, and poke your friends until they do too!!

just to clarify there has been no application from marks and spemcers to relocate to whitfield.
the terms of the st james development are that no retailer will be allowed to open up in whitfield until the dtiz has been signed, sealed and delivered and that 60% of the retail space has been taken.
once that has happened i cannot imagine that any business would want to move to whitfield when all the footfall will be in town.

By my calculations global warming will have made Whitfield a sea side resort by then!

I suspect M&S would not be interested in moving to Whitfield in any case, so I think we need to bring this thread back a bit. My point was that given their long history in the town, I would have thought it was about time for some new investment from M&S. The DTIZ would certainly be a prime location for them, and as the anchor store, this would be a big draw for other retailers. I don't see this as being detrimental to the rest of the town, as people would still pass through the High Street, Market Square, and Castle Street. A new M&S would draw in customers from further afield (remember there's no M&S in Folkestone), as well as passing trade from the port. If they opened on Sundays, there would be a lot of interest from folks across the Channel where the shops are still closed on Sundays.
I think the planning rules restrict retail developments at Whitfield to the likes of DIY, electrical, white goods, etc. where there is a rationale for out-of-town developments with large car parks.

M&S would be a good name to be flagged up alongside Townwall Street

Been nice knowing you :)
