A 'free press', as much as 'free speech' itself, are terms out of time and space.
Concepts, free of a who or a when, but very much anchored in a 'where', in as far as Democratic States are concerned.
They are part and parcel of Democracy, and as such here, are held hostage while the few who control their output are as yet unthreatened and untouched, nay;are as yet seen as much as victims themselves.
Our free press is an expensive whore, sharing it's favours out across our 'valued' institutions and charging the public for these, their services, services rendered to the Johns who in turn smile down upon us in an over familiar avuncular fashion.
If we wish to go forward in readdressing the relationship between press and public while retaining a free press and free speech we should legislate upon the ownership of the media as a whole.
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.
