I don't actually agree with his conclusions - as far as I am concerned our press are the lowest of the low and need a close rein; comparisons with shackling the press and 1933 Nazi Germany are far fetched, in my belief. The fact is that the press had no respect for privacy on even the most sensitive of areas (Millie Dowler's family, for example) and deserve to have their parameters set out in black and white.

Opposition, have had or developed too close a relationship with the press in a way which
has not been in the public interest. In part, this has simply been a matter of spending a
disproportionate amount of time, attention and resource on this relationship in comparison
to, and at the expense of, other legitimate claims in relation to the conduct of public affairs.
In part, it has been a matter of going too far in trying to control the supply of news and
information to the public in return for the hope of favourable treatment by sections of
the press, to a degree and by means beyond what might be considered to be the fair and
reasonable (albeit partisan) conduct of public debate.
118. On the other hand, politicians (supported by some academic commentators) have argued that
this has been necessary to counteract the attempts of some sections of the press to discredit
their motives and distort the policies that they seek to promote. I have concluded that in
these kinds of respect, growing public awareness and impatience is simply making this kind
of conduct counter-productive for politicians (if not for the press) in the critically important
attempt to seek public trust and confidence. I need do no more than draw attention to that
fact.
119. There are other respects, however, in which the evidence suggests that politicians have
conducted themselves in relation to the press in ways which have not served the public
interest. They have placed themselves in positions in which they risked becoming vulnerable
to influences which are neither known about nor transparent. There is thus no mechanism
for holding them to account (which is, of course, the usual responsibility of the press itself).
The result has been to create what was, at least potentially, a perception of conflict with their
responsibilities in relation to the conduct of public affairs. A number of clear opportunities to
address this perception have been missed and there has been a persistent failure to respond
more generally to public concern about the culture practices and ethics of the press.
120. I have concluded that a combination of these factors has contributed to a lessening of public
confidence in the conduct of public affairs, by giving rise to legitimate perceptions and
concerns that politicians and the press have traded power and influence in ways which are
contrary to the public interest and out of public sight. These perceptions and concerns are
inevitably particularly acute in relation to the conduct by politicians of public policy issues in

In the end it's a rather simple minded report which ticks all the right boxes for those tending towards a liberal left persuasion and is merely artillery to launch at the government by the likes of milliband and his horrendous circle.
The dangers in the implementation of this ghastly idea will do more damage to freedom of speech and political discourse than people realise. There are clauses and recommendations hidden away which will do great damage to our democracy and will end up making those who hold power be it in the political or corporate sphere less accountable and more able to get away with corruption than they do at present.

For years people have been complaining about the press for a multitude of reasons but what we have with the final report is a dog's dinner.
It seems to me that they have concentrated on the bleatings of minor celebs and other high profilers with an axe to grind mixing that up with those who have been truly damaged and hurt by the goings on with every single newspaper in the market.
Rather like banking where the retail and investment sides of the banks were lumped together which created one almighty mess what the Leveson report has done is fail to have looked at the investigative aspect of journalism (good) and the public assassination and tawdry tabloid reduction of people's lives (very bad) and separate the two.
So what will happen if the proposals go through is a clampdown on real investigative reporting of the rich, infamous and high minded hypocrites where the original intention was to protect the public.
Very, very clever lawyers and lobbyists will use any changes to protect their interests in the most forceful of ways only imaginable in banana republics and despotic regimes.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions and what really gets my goat is the exploitation of those such as milliband who are only using the issue for political gains.
Hopefully the public will see through it but I suspect they won't.

I grant that it is the PCC which is the focus and not Tabloid Excess.
It would be interesting to examine what those who oppose the recommendations of this report would do to tackle the issues at stake.
I did put forward alternative foci under Barry's blog, there has been much grumbling since, but little else.
A lawyer drew up this report yet lawyers do not like it, perhaps it is because an establishment lawyer (Privy Councillor) did the drawing up and less establishment lawyers oppose the findings, perhaps then the report is considered to be skewed to favour the establishment.
The difficulty for some to come clean on just how Leveson has got it wrong lies in the present default of Market Forces as the driver that led to the many excesses complained of.
