i don't think i have seen so many cruise passengers in dover in one morning before.
all the way from the seafront to market square they were walking in droves.
the tables outside the marine hotel were all taken with many others studying the menu.
the three cafes in market square plus the baguette place were inundated.

Just goes to show what potential there is from the cruise trade, Howard. Admittedly it's a seaonsal trade, but Dover could and should be doing so much more to capitalise on these visits. People have often moaned that Dover doesn't benefit from the "passing ferry trade", but these passengers are actually visiting the town. Yes, the cruise lines will offer them excursions further afield, but a good proportion of them will want to get a taste of the local culture and do some shopping. A long, hard look at how the town markets itself is long overdue.

give up there kevin, roger has come up with several masterplans since i moved here, none taken up.
in the day when we had a tourism department the remit was to counter any criticism not to actually pomote the town and surrounds.

Maybe a dancing troupe from Doverforum might be the answer, any takers

Me! Well I've got the beard, but no sign of a sheeps bladder methinks I used it for Rabbie Burns night

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

Blimey O'Reilly..great pictures above there guys. Stunning.
I took a few as well. Was quite dark as you can see in Jacqui's ones there but tried to show the colour of the lights as she went.
NOTE the pushy seagull getting into the picture below.

Great photos and as we have all said before, there is so much unrealised potential for Dover, from the cruise ships and their passengers.
There are a lot more turn-arounds nowadays, than Port of Calls, but still a lot of growth in the benefits these cruise ships and their passengers can bring to Dover.
I know it's like a broken record, but someone to co-ordinate things between the cruise terminals and the Town, is what is needed, someone with projects and initiatives to move Dover forward and promote and support the businesses here - large and small, chain and independant.
Until the Town and District Councils and the Harbour Board accept this and part-fund it, no advancement can be made and Dover will not become a destination and take its rightful place as a good Town for people to spend a few days, whether before or after their cruise, or as a short break.

I have been out today with the Mayor on a tour of Dover with Mayoral gang from Dartford Bexley Swanley Folkestone Deal and Sandwich and I was talking to Dave from the Transport museum and he told me that 900 people caught the shuttle bus from the Terminal yesterday.
Yes some only went to the castle but from what I saw in the Town yesterday many stayed in Town,it is quite weird giving people information on the Town and as I came through it later seeing those same people. The cruise has to be here long enough for the people to visit, and there were 40 buses taking people to other places,on Tuesday there are 60 bus tours booked as we have 2 big cruisers in,but we proved today with the Mayors there is plenty to see in and around Dover.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

There is indeed plenty to see and do here John, but the Town itself needs to be cleaner, smarter, more welcoming for cruise pasengers and aother visitors.
I think also, that even if it is only on cruise days, there should/could be a local tour bus, that goes to other places than just the Castle - places like the Transport Museum and Crabble Corn Mill, both of which are crying out for visitors but there are other sites too of course.

Funnily enough Roger our tour started today at the Transport Museum and went around the town and ended up having lunch at Crabble Corn Mill.
