Tomorrow sees the maiden call of the Costa Pacifica, which I believe is the largest cruise ship in tonnage terms to visit Dover. She weighs in at 114,147 gross tons. Also in port is the Seabourn Sojorn, so it should be quite a sight.

Guess who is at the Docks working for Visit Kent tomorrow, yes me! over 3000 passengers expected to disembark. All I hope is Posh Barry has time to send out some of his servants to keep me supplied with coffee.

If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Great to hear that so many passengers will be visiting Dover on this cruise ship tomorrow. What a shame though that once again, there has been no publicity. The local newspaper in Southampton always makes a big fanfare for a new cruise ship. In Dover, we never seem to be able to make a big splash about anything even when it's right here on our doorstep. Anyone heard of marketing and PR?

Costa Pacifica with a gross tonnage of 114,147 just edges Carnival Splendor at 113,300gt to become the largest cruise ship to visit Dover. They are near sisters as they both belong to the Concordia class which comprises several Costa vessels, and the Carnival Splendor as a one-off, since both companies are part of the Carnival Corporation. There are detail differences including the trademark funnels.
Carnival Splendor had quite a welcome in Dover as she was on her maiden voyage and was christened here by Myleene Klass with various activities being staged along the seafront. She had a fire in a generator room whilst off the Mexican coast last year and was without power for three days, eventually being towed into San Diego. Conditions were pretty dire onboard, with no air conditioning or other services, and rations were flown in from the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.

Thanks for the tip there guys. Well done Kevin. Alas we are fogbound at the moment, so hope it clears..cant see a blasted thing.
I was onboard for the launch of that one Ed, good picture there, I have a pic of Myleene Klass somewhere, will see if I can find it.

All those passengers and the vast majority will be going off out of Dover. I hope the businesses in Town do well today.
The market is dead, so that's not a draw for anyone to come here. The buildings on Townwall Street, by the underpass are an embarrassment and no special welcome in Town for cruise passengers or anyone else.
I don't know if DHB are putting on a welcome for the cruise passengers with a band or anything.
So much to do and no one's doing it.

Sadly the passengers might go off in their coaches but luckily we usually get some of the crew spending their money.

No sign of the big one, although the Costa Magica has just this minute come in and the Seabourne is already there..can see it now that the fog is clearing.
It the meantime as compensation here is a pic of Myleene Klass onboard the Carnival Splendour as mentioned previously by Ed there. Taken by yours truly in a photographers scrum...
This is a scientific and technical study of Myleene checking out the controls with the captain.
Love the photograph.............and the morning banter/laugh...
I have ranted about Townwall Street etc...on another thread....
Here are two considerations...and again wonder as to why nothing has happened....
I can remember...amongst the many consulatants bought in, heaven knows how much money these have cost the people of Dover over the years...anyway, this one was on show at the Town Hall.....a walkway from the Cruise terminal ..simple to the Town.....this could have been of historical interest, and also a feed from the sea front to the Castle....
People from the Cruise ships, are and always have been hungry to see and feel Dover....as it should be....but it is blocked everywhere...............

I think you'll find it's the Costa Pacifica you've just seen, Paul, not the Magica. They are similar in appearance, but the Pacifica is slightly larger. I believe the Costa Magica has paid her last visit to Dover for the current season and is probably off to warmer climes. Depressing isn't it!

How much would it cost to have the Morris men dancing, the Snowdon Male Voice choir singing or a large (re-usable) ''Welcome to Dover'' sign fluttering in the daylight sun?
They haven't got a bloody clue,

Thanks Kevin we posted at the same time there. Have now added a picture to my previous post too, yes it is indeed the Costa Pacifica. Needed binoculars to see it properly.

Couldn't agree more, Marek. The cruise business is expanding rapidly and competition is getting fiercer amongst European ports. The town is already missing a trick here, and unless there is more effective destination marketing/PR the business will go elsewhere. There is no doubt that the White Cliffs and Castle must be a major pull for cruise ships entering the port, but the passenger experience of the town is not likely to be good. This feedback will get back to the itinerary planners at the cruise lines and they will transfer to other ports, not just in the UK but also continental Europe.
Great picture, Paul!
