  Thanks to funding received from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
  On the 16th January, at the new Kent Miners Memorial site, another step forward was taken in keeping Miners Heritage alive in Kent.
  
  With help from Aylesham Heritage, Anita Luckett, Ace Design and many other local community members, we announced the release of our DVD, Booklet and the start of our campaign to tour Kent with Talks on Mining in East Kent.
  
  I want to invite Schools, Colleges, and groups etc. to ask us, to come along, with our free DVD & Booklet and give a presentation, with film footage, memorabilia & talks, on Mining in East Kent.
  We cater for all ages and can offer a package, to suit all your requirements."
  From sinking the shafts, right through to present day, we want to show the History of the Kent Miner, depicting the important part that miners and their families have played, in forging community ties in the Towns and Villages in our corner of Kent and how the mining communities that are still present today, are still striving to keep our Mining Heritage and Community Spirit alive.
  
  DVD's and booklets are available at Dover Tourist Information plus many other outlets that can be found on our website www.movetheminer.org
  The DVD's are limited and you will need to request on from outlets, they will not be on display.

  This looks great Gary, I hope the Schools will take you up on this important part of local history.
  
  On another note, have you thought about bringing this to life in the form of a Carnival Float?? We are currently booking in entries for this years Carnival 8th July, great opportunity for you to hand out leaflets direct to the locals.

  Gary, my old friend, you are a true stalwart to your convictions & one side of the mining story.
  
  Without having the benefit of seeing the DVD which I will purchase, I pose this question.
  
  Did anyone look to offer the view of anyone who had the nostalgic knowledge of the mining industry other than the mining community representing your point of view.
  
  If you did, it will be a balanced DVD, if not then it misses the opportunity for people to form or assess an objective viewpoint.

  BTW has anyone written a definitive history of the Kent coal industry? If not it would be a shame if it were not done soon to get the testimonies of older miners, without which no record would be complete.

  If you can get a copy The World on Our Backs is a great history of the kent coal field in the 1972 strike but I suspect it is long out of print

  This is fab. And a carnival float sounds like a really good plan. Watty - this is a story, in the tradition of the folk tales that have kept history alive for centuries, but with the benefit of new technology - but it is, nevertheless, folk at its best. It has no need to offer another view, that is its point. Others can do that.

  This DVD and Booklet is about our mining history in Kent not about the strike.
  Yes, our Miners were capable of standing up for their rights and taking on the Landowner and sometimes oppressive Colliery Manager.
  However, there are far more important things for us to remember from the last 100 years of mining in Kent.
  Malcolm Pitt says it all when he sets out the reason how our culture was formed and survived over the years.
  Miners arriving here from all over this country were not welcomed and were discriminated against.
  Signs like, "No Miners need apply" on adverts for accommodation, pub signs with "No dogs and No miners allowed" and even scrap ends of meat being sold in local shops by calling it Miners Bacon etc.
  This alienation caused our miners to turn inwards and join together to create their own culture.
  Their way of life, which was a far cry from what the media have wrongly painted about them over the years, not only influenced the history in their surrounding towns and villages but is now a true story that needs telling.
  
  Our medical centre's saved local villagers lives for many years, many heart attack victims who were not miners had their lives saved and our ambulances were used to save non miners lives, until they shut.
  
  This is only the first of a series of DVD's and along with our talks, we will be telling the story of the Kent Miners.
  
  Thousands of people only know what they have read and seen in the media over the years.
  This year we celebrate the Centenary of coaling in Kent and now is the time to tell the true story, which is not finished yet.

  Many thanks for comments, your feedback would be appreciated on dvd and booklet, good or bad?
  
  If anyone has problems getting hold of dvd and booklet, please just contact me.
  The booklet is just as interesting as dvd and worth a read.
  
  Apointments are already coming in, even from as far away as Rochester.
  We will be putting ouselves around and a float sounds good, I will have to look into that, if I get the time.

  Thanks for putting link to the chik site on this thread, it is a very good site and well worth visiting but alas has no one looking after it at the moment,it has a few mistakes on the history and the Picture Library is not available.
