Dover Town Carnival Ltd were invited to a Dover Carnival Parade on October 2nd 2011 today.
Whilst we wish Dover Carnival Association every success with their Carnival we would like the people of Dover and most especially our sponsors for our Carnival in July to be aware that the October Carnival is not being run by our Association nor is it in any way connected to Dover Town Carnival Ltd.
The feedback received after our Carnival in July was fantastic and we would hope to continue the good rapport we feel we built up over the last year with the people of Dover and are continuing to raise funds to ensure that Dover Town Carnival Parade on 1st July 2012 will be bigger and better.
We hope that you understand why we have felt it necessary to publicly make this statement and that this no way diminishes the Spirit of Carnival that we were so proud of in July.
Thanks

SHELI;
I Think most people find the 2 carnivals situation rather sad.
surely finding ways of pooling resources/expertese is the way forward?
2 have 2 beauty queens etc does make a mockery of the situation
is there no way forward on this?

Hi Keith,
It would be great if the two associations could work together and we had hoped that we had found a way to move forward.
At this time I can only say that it appears that is not meant to be, but not through lack of trying.
My main concern at this time is that our reputation with regards to the Carnival Parade remains intact.
Thanks

October to have this needless parade is just plain daft and much too late in the season. Warm coats will be needed.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Carnival.
Originally carnival was once a year, a period when all the folk gatherd and ate big meals, with plenty of meat, and ale to wash it down.
At some point, carnival ended, and everyone was supposed to abstain from eating meat for... quite a few days and weeks.
Just my tuppence worth of history to blend in.
Is a real shame that the carnivals cant work together but we never bother with the unofficial one sadly, any chance the real carnival can be held on a saturday like the olden days as a sunday is a nitemare with public transport.

Carnival is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February. Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, mask and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which mark an overturning of daily life.
In the days before Lent, all rich foods and drink had to be disposed of.....The consumption of this, a giant party that involved the WHOLE COMMUNITY is thought to be the origin of the Carnival
All of this business of TWO Carnivals, is stupid, and will just highlight the rot in the advancement of this Town, because people just do not get along in a Common Interest....................drain on money and resources too I would think..............
Even Notting Hill and the famous Brazilian agree. Our once vibrant Carnival has become tatty and sad........and now one on a Sunday and October is Complete Madness...............as usual......

Didnt dover used to have a christmas carnival ???

Thanks Sheli - I can fully understand why you need to let people know this has nothing to do with Dover Town Carnival - as you said before: reputation matters.

Hi Keith, in response to your posts I can only re-iterate that we have met with the other Association and outlined a way forward, unfortunately at this time we are still awaiting a response. There is nothing else we can do and whilst i understand your feeling with regard to two Carnival Courts etc... at other Carnivals this year the two Courts have worked side by side and both have been awarded prizes and the girls all dance together and generally get on well.
Dover Carnival Association has not put on a Carnival for several years and were happy to hold a smaller event in October called The Dickens Festival, so Dover benefited with two very different events. Dover Town Carnival was set up to keep the July Carnival alive and as such Dover had a Carnival I hope they could be proud of again.
We have simply issued a statement to ensure that our reputation is protected.
With regard to a Christmas Carnival we have been discussing the possibility of running a small Christmas Carnival in conjunction with the Town Council's Christmas Lights Swith On Event. In the light of a Carnival being run in October, we feel that a Christmas Carnival in November is no longer viable. Maybe next year.

SHELI;
Could I thankyou for your honest response, mine was not to have a dig, but purely to give you a laymans view, and what othes are saying.
it is a shame if the other carnival oganisation cant at least meet you but i hope they do.
with regard to your(sheli) doing a xmas carnival, would this not bring you into conflict with the other organisation wh as you say do a dickens event?
maybe doing a joint event over xmas maybe the one to break the ice?
just a few thoughts sheli

Thank you for the clarity of information. As an "outsider" with nothing to do with either "carnival" I can say that it just looks ridiculous to have two Dover Carnivals! I have no idea what the internal politics are that have caused this and I am not interested - just commenting..........
