there will be NO BUS

if there are double yellow lines then parking is forbidden thus allowing buses and more importantly fire engines and ambulances free to do their work.

As you know howard that's incorrect
there are few parking spaces in and around clarendon/belgrave Rd
it will not get enforced even if they were put down
and it will move the cars presently parked on the bottom of hill a little way up the hill and stop the bus

How about resident parking permits? And double yellows one side along the bus route?

no peter nice idea but i know what would happen.
a) people would then say "why should i pay to park outside my own home" even though they don't actually own the road?
b) if everyone did join the scheme they would have a less than 50/50 chance of getting a space.

We have a serious problem here, that is to get worse, and we can go round the houses(excuse the pun lol)
car ownership is to increase, and probably grid lock many roads when there are so many cars on the road.
Whilst not anti car, we do need to work out, when they are not in use, where do they all go?
The clarendons was not built for the amount of cars presently on it, and to increase big time over the years, to a point of grid lock by 2022

car ownership is falling and will continue to fall due to the ever increasing running costs, add to that in our major cities it is quicker to get around by public transport or bicycle.

The only sensible answer is to restrict and enforce parking to one side of the road with double yellow on the other side, at the same time make those with back entrances park in their rear garden if there is safe access.
The only other alternative is to hinder pedestrians using the pavement and stop he buses, fire engines etc from the narrow roads which is crazy and just not an option.
I have noticed even in my wide road there is a shortage of parking, houses having no drives but two or more cars per building plus those who work in the area parking in any available space.
We have far too many cars and nowhere for them to park in so many areas in the town.

howard
according to the RAC car ownership has increased from 19 million(1971) to 31 million(2007)
and with present trends likely to reach between 37 million to 44 million by(2020) RAC words.

Those in big cities like Belfast, Liverpool and London might manage without a car. Those who work unusual hours and live in an ordinary small town like Dover or those in the country with poor and expensive public transport will still be in need of several cars per family.

Farnham, where we recently spent 6 months, has a controlled parking zone throughout the town, except the centre. If your house has no off street parking you can buy an annual permit for fifty quid. This entitles you to park in all on street bays with no time limit and without buying a pay and display ticket. If you are a resident and have an off street parking place you have to pay £300 a year, also if you need one for a second car. It works well, particularly to deter the people who drive into Dover, park in the Clarendons then walk to work or off to the station, which I suspect is part of our problem here.

Whatever happened to the proposed multi-storey car park by the station?
