"David Cameron will promise to hold an 'in-out' referendum on Britain's EU membership by the end of 2017 in a speech tomorrow."

A guy dies and goes to Heaven, St, Peter shows him around the place, the Baptist's garden - pleasant enough, Protestant peak - delightful, St.Peter then asks him to duck down and stay quiet while they pass the next section. When all is well the guy asks St. Peter what all the fuss was about St. Peter replies, Oh , them. They are the Roman Catholics, they think they are the only ones up here.
What will 2017 have to do with Dave? Who might this 'we' be?

IF the Tories win a majority at the next election. Which they won't.

David Cameron is to promise an in/out referendum on the EU
if the Conservatives win the next election.
So, will the hoards flocking to UKIP return to the Tories to secure their referendum, or will they vote against them and ensure it doesn't happen?

It's hard to say, Stuart, as I'm not a member of UKIP.
While we should have an in-out EU referendum before 2017, to split the vote in favour of Labour would be unforgivable.
My opinion is that UKIP will seek to ensure an EU referendum, so they might seek an agreement with the Tories for a future coalition, possibly in return for an earlier date for an in/out vote.
The idea that hundreds of millions of people have the right to come and settle in "the UK" is just a Labour policy, and the Tories have finally achieved common sense.
To discourage the Conservative Party now would be a gamble between future Prosperity and total Desolation.
Labour must not win!

The Prime Minister will say legislation for a referendum will be drafted BEFORE the next election:

I have always said the Conservatives will get us out of the EU.
The important point that Alexander seems to have missed is that this is part of the strong-arm tactics to renegotiate our relationship with the EU and to repatriate powers.
The referendum will be after such negotiations and via this vote the public will either accept the new arrangements or get us out all together.
This does mark the end of Britain being part of the 'ever closer Union'.
Cameron must now get on and win an outright victory in 2015 because another coalition with the LimpDems will block this vote and renegotiation.

Your first line is interesting Barry, I'd disagree if you're talking about the Conservatives under Cameron

David - a Europhile has no chance of being selected as a Conservative parliamentary candidate these days and as the old placeholders die out or retire the parliamentary party moves further and further to an anti-EU position. The Party's MPs today are more anti-EU than ever and an overall majority at the next election will form the most anti-EU government we have ever had. Cameron even as leader and even if he was really pro-EU could not hold back the pressure for a far more robust stand on Europe. We are inevitably moving towards a situation where EU membership, at least in its current form, has to end. The big question is whether any new relationship can be such that it will be able to keep us as members in some way or other. I doubt it and any new arrangement will effectively leave us outside the central EU core.

Barry, I agree with your opening sentence, if Cameron reflected the views of the core party such as yourself, he wouldn't dither until 2017. This is just posturing for me, you're far closer to the tories than me but I bet not too many are cheering over their cornflakes.

EU referendum talk weakens UK's hand
So says a letter in today's Guardian signed by a number of those with some involvement...

I see the Kinnocks are keen to keep their snouts in the trough.
Do you mean involvement or self interest Tom?

Tom - we are getting all the old pro-EU propagander and scares stories. These will increase as the Eurofanatics try to scare people into remaining in the most corrupt, bullying, anti-democratic organisation since the fall of the old Soviet Union.

I dillied and I dallied, I (almost) lost my way...but in the end I knew others here were capable of assessing 'involvement' for themselves David.
P.S.
I was recently asked to add my name to a petition to curb EU Political Party funding, and through that exercise discovered that I have thirteen MEPs to choose from...you learn something new each and every day.

Second only to our own system, that you so strongly wish to see return to full strength.
We can hardly affect change from the wrong side of the fence.

All the parties should offer a referendum on the EU, then we can concentrate on voting for them on their other issues...
I wouldn't want the referendum overshadowing everything else...
Hark at me getting all political
