[OK, I admit it, the above phrase tickled me, and I got it from the article linked-to below.]
While I am sure that the world would lose something, something more quaint than precious, if Gib were ever to be subsumed into Spain, it is surely more than it's quaintness that is being so stoutly defended.
I fear, if fear is the correct term, that the 'role' that is being defended here is it's status as Tax Haven.
Yes, it has always (an awfully long time anyway) been a little Sun-kissed part of Britain that shares many of the benefits that we mainlanders enjoy;the NHS for instance, but if it's tax status were to be changed could it survive?
And more telling, if it lost it's Tax Haven sheen, would any UK Government care?
