To stand as candidate MP, one needs £500 deposit, and a suggested sum of £5,000 to fund an election campaign.
One can also have one's own party with its own emblem and name.
You also need a minimum number of signatures from the Constituency area, if I'm not mistaken.
Something well worth saving up for.
And one needs policies to present during the campaign, national and local policies.

One has to have convincing arguments, Keith, to be able to prove them, and a track record of being involved in local matters can also help out. For example participating in public consultations and having one's representations accepted as relevant.
To prove this helps the public decide if the candidate is willing and combative, ready to challenge and stand up for the public interest. Someone who will not be told no for an answer.
Someone who will NEVER give in!
