13:1589201The Chinese do not have to eat shark fin soup. The French do not have to kill millions of undersize fish to make posh fish soup. Tuna can be caught by sustainable fishing. Many things can be changed.
The first being the idiots in Brussels.
Last year they were considering forcing pleasure/club anglers into buying a licence and putting a catch quota on them, in the name of conservation.

14:5989208gary,if changing the makes a differance whick i dont think it will, but a better idea is to police it better.this can be done by prosacuting the trawler captains/boat owners confiscating there boats etc untill they get the message.

17:5189217Illegal fishing has always been a problem, but it still needs dealing with more strongly, and perhaps different types of nets to ensure the small ones get away.

18:2189219Seems so unfair that the Boulogne fishermen just laugh at our compliance. Ok we could (and I guess do) set the example that the other EU countries should follow. However can you imagine attempting to enforce the the rules in France? The fishermen would simply blockade the ports ,set fire to tyres on the main incoming roads and cause complete chaos-and their police(probably in a related union) just stand and watch. If the Brit fishermen blockaded Dover the UK authorities would probably arrest the lot, impound their vessels and ultimately throw them in jail. The same goes for most EU regulation-only we keep to it! It's all a very sick joke.

19:2489220quite right richard, the problem is compounded by the fact that the people in brussels that make the rules do not enforce them.
kent county council is tryng to get compensation over the problems caused by operation stack, no chance, our government will not stand up for them.

20:0989225Brian.
Policing is not working, simple as that, French, Belgian, Spanish, Russian and all others are equipped with same sophisticated radar as our fishery protection vessels and can dump illegal fish in minutes.
Richard.
Spot on, we are the only ones sticking to rules (not all I'm sure) and the only ones trying to police.
The French authorities are turning a blind eye and it is them that should be fined or made to put their house in order, as should other countries.

10:2289251Brian,
I am aware that Russia are not EU member's, but they have as much to lose as anyone else, if this situation continues un-checked and should be included in any changes.

13:0389259Ian.
I have seen a few programmes like his, 1000's of sharks a day, have their fins cut off and are discarded back to the sea still alive, unable to swim, unable to defend themselves, if they are lucky, another shark will kill them quick, if not, they die slowly.
All that suffering for a bowl of soup.

14:4889274And all this fuss about a human getting executed for taking another human life!! What two faced beings we are that so much non-human life forms are used, abused and killed the world over. How the hell would some intelligent alien form (if they do exist), view us as intelligent life if they were watching us?
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.
