Check out Hugh's website at

I am sure some of you have been following Hugh and the other's on TV but have you signed up to support his campaign?
1000's of tons of DEAD fish per week are dumped back into the North Sea, good prime eating fish.
Personally, I want all purse nets banned; I cannot see the need to kill all small fish, crabs, starfish, jellyfish small shrimps and many other species just to get 1species of fish to the plate. That would not be too difficult to achieve. Catching one particular fish in your net is a much bigger problem; you can't tell a fish he's not wanted in this net. Throwing dead Cod back into the sea because you have already caught too many Cod, will not help the Cod population to increase. If they are caught by accident and are above your quota, why not bring them ashore in different colour boxes and be brought cheaply by local schools and hospitals?

12:0489043From someone who was born in Grimsby, the loss of 'illegal' fish is disgraceful.
Fish stocks have been severely depleted over the last two generations. Surely somehow the fishing fraternity can ensure only the larger fish are landed.
At worst, I suppose a lot of dead small fish put back do provide some food for the others ... but a needless waste of wildlife. Like a fox killing a whole lot of chickens when he only wants one.

14:0989065all about bureaucracy at the end of the day.
saw a short film on the box from hastings the other day, the amount they were allowed to catch and sell hardly paid the running costs of the trawler.
our government have sold out our fisherpeople on the issue of quotas.

18:2289109I have always thought it was a travesty throwing back the fish that can not be landed, they are dead so will not be improving the fish stocks which was the idea behind quotas. Where their size is the problem they could go for animal feed or fertilizer.

18:3189112it wasn't that long ago that farmers were paid to grow crops then leave them in the ground, the fish situation is no different.

03:4189156We at UKIP have a very full fishing policy ,you can download it by going into "Policies"section of
www.ukip.org
All I am going to do now is write down juat a very small part of it.
(1) Require all commercial species of fish caught, regardless of size or species,to be landed and recorded.
This will allow the Government to determine how best to manage the recoveryof UK fishing grounds.
(2) To preserve fish stocks,UKIP will establish a system of moveable "No Take Zones" allowing fish to spawn and assisting recovery in overfished areas.
(3)Abandon all EU quotas and strictly forbid the shameful discarding of dead fish-sometimes up to 70%of catchesor 800.000 tons p.a.
(4) Immediately withdraw from the Common Fisheries Policy.
(5)Reassertour territorial rights, reclaim our fishing grounds, restore our fishing fleet and support our fishing industry for future generations.
As I said this just a small part or our fishing policy.

(1) No fish or species that are under size should be killed, not even for recording; all captains can give you sufficient data and tell you how wrong it is.
(2) Good idea but the British fleet and British fisheries would be the only ones to abide by it. As is being proved already.
(3) Totally agree.
(4) I agree but replace it with what?
(5) Good idea in theory, except, at this time, all that will achieve, is our fleet sticking to our waters with little fish stocks left and everyone else fishing our borders making British waters sterile. Go to any French fishing port and you will see catches of illegal fish, masses of undersize fish, being landed, because they are not policed.

11:3989189Just because other countries do not always stick to the rules, it doesn't mean that we shouldn't.

11:5689193While I agree with you in principle Kath, in this case I think the rules could be broken, prior to their change, because of the ridiculous and immoral waste of dead fish.

12:0989195Kath,
I totally agree with you. If we stick to the rules, which we should, then why should other's not stick to them?
But that was not what you meant, was it Kath, you thought I was condoning us breaking the rules?

13:0689200Brian.
Thats simple. Because I think we should stand up to these countries and stop them decimating our fish stocks, worldwide. How would joining them, safeguard our future stocks?
Changing the Law is the answer. not breaking it.
