There's definitely something in Barry's point: that the Tory party is in search of a strong figure adapted not for the 1970s-80s period, but for this present era.
Presumably the Conservative party did not achieve a sane economy once Margaret Thatcher left government, and wishes it could go back in time.
But that would imply reviewing years of Conservative government starting from the day M. Thatcher left 10 Downing Street.
So where did the Conservative party go wrong?
I could write a couple of tomes on it, but far too boring would it be.
My best guess is that speculation set in, house prices rose out of proportion, speculators became filthily rich, the economy boomed and then went bust, mainly owing to the fruits of speculative economy.
It's like a rocket: it's launched, goes up, describes an arc and come down with a boom.
That's when the economy goes bust.
The idea is, to be able to forecast and predict the rocket's unholy trajectory and its certain landing long before it actually hits.
As things stand now, we have Austerity.
We may be drinking acorn coffee soon
