09:3176520Whilst Im no fan of the house of lords, If it has to be in place, isn't it time they stopped playing politics with it.
in yesterdays torymail cameron is to flood the lords with 44 tories to make sure he doesn't get to much opposition to his cuts.
If the lords is to be even slightly effrective it needs to be an alternative view to the govt, holdng the govt to account.
This move is a poltical one and does little for politics in general nor those wanting to keep the lords in its present position

10:0676529Keith - Labour did the same, so its all right when Labour dom it but wrong when the Conservatives do.
There is a need to correct an imbalance there as a temporary measure until the reform comes through - something left unfinished by Labour.

10:0876530Melissa - there are only two political threads in the top 10 so hardly 'run down by it all'. You do not have to read them...
As at 10.09am that is!!! 24th Oct.

10:0976531when will we ever see an elected upper chamber, the present system is usually manipulated by whoever is in chareg of the country.
i can remember tony benn saying ages ago about appointing a thousand labour peers.
i wonder where they would all have sat.

10:2276535Barry most of the threads are some how taken over on potitics and its dull matey more to life. Also your wrong i counted more than just two.

10:2376536On the Woolsack given a chance, Howard.
The present system has made a complete mockery of the Lords full of friends of the parties, hence the ones who were on the fiddle.

you are correct it need reform
but this move is solely to make sure the tories have a majority in the lords.
And no the Labour party were no better
doesnt mean you have to follow suit.
What would be better is to see a better more democratic house of lords one that challenges the govt of the day

11:5076543how do other countries elect/select their upper chambers?
france for example has no aristocracy, having chopped all their heads off some time back, presumably they must have an elected assembly.

11:5876545Today's system of beng born into it, or selected by your friends flys in the face of democracy.
It needs urgent reform
I won't mention, about the cost

There are two in the top 10 still at 12.00 25th Oct.
House of Lords
And more cracks appear
below that at 14 is DDC prospective councillor - not really a party political one but some might regard it as politics....
That is not many at all.
As for the rest, PaulB brough a party political reference into a thread on vulberable kids (reference to the ever popular and great Norman Tebbit) but it was no more than a passing reference.
No more in the top 10 at that time Melissa.

12:2776550The House of Lords members should be independant of any party that way they could agree or disagree in complete freedom with the Bills being put infront of them. Human nature being what it is this will never happen.

15:0576559No unlikely...good to have your political contributions Jan...I noted the comment on the other thread. But The Lords will always remain party political I guess, and I suspect thats the only way it can be done. But what has been shocking lately is the emergence of news about some of the crooks in there. Call me naive but I would have hoped The Lords would have been above petty crookism.
And not all that petty either...the amount swindled by Baroness Uddin and how it was done is to my mind clearly a criminal offence. I myself would be waving goodbye to my everyday freedoms if I falsely claimed more than £100,000 pounds from the taxpayer.

15:5276565baroness uddin seems to believe that as she has repaid the money nothing should happen to her.
i bet the train robbers wished they had thought of that, would have saved them a lot of grief.

16:0676569The House of Lords seems to me a place where men roll in by Rolls Royce and then return to their mansions. Would they make use of the London double-decker in order to save money?

16:4076575Would help if they stayed awake, everytime it is on TV they are snoozing on the back benches,I believe it should be done away with, except of course if they offered me a place........Lord Goodwin of Sandwich...catchy.....no do away with it and it would be cheaper to have a kip at Travelodge.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
