Crushed...another year has gone by and still no knighthood !!what am I to do!!??
The guy that brought us Big Brother got a knighthood.
But there seems to be fewer knights this time around. Lots of the more minor awards...going to the likes of Ronnie Corbett and Helena Bonham Carter. Ronnie is already 81 so if they havent made him a knight this time around then time is running out.

aways surprised when business people get gongs for being successful and making a lot of money for themselves.
different if they have invented something that makes life better for the rest of us.
i think the awards should be for those who give their time, effort and expertise for the general betterment of others.
for the runners up tea with the mayor would be a good substitute.

Howard - take risks, build up a profitable business and employ thousands of people. That is certainly worth a gong or two - few people have that ability and we need more of them. If that is not a means to bettering others then nothing is.

barry
who meets your criteria about creating jobs?
the tesco bloke worked solely on expanding their overseas operations, the hedge fund bloke bet on northern rock failing, that hardly done a lot for the unemployment business.
on another note nobody creates jobs in retail, they are basically staff that move around when one supermarket steals a march on the others.

Howard - you attacked businessmen generally for getting awards. OK over to specifics, these particular ones got gongs for services to the arts or charity as I understand it.
If an overpaid footballer can get an award just for being able to kick a ball around for 'services to sport' then a businessman should be entitled to an award for 'services to business'. There are many way such a 'service to business' can be justified from the example I already have given to establishing a premier brand for an existing business, to rescuing an existing business from failure, to turning a 'so so' existing business into a major brand, for helping and supporting other businesses, for innovation etc etc etc....

a betterr way is not to give these gongs at all to these people but give them to geniune charity type people or people like those who devote there life to caring for relatives etc

BarryW, I think the difference is when people do something as their job (remunerated) and when they do it for altruistic reasons.

Then, Bern, awards for people on the public payroll should be extraordinarily rare.

i think keith has got it about right, i would add people lke firepersons, police, paramedics and others that perform acts of heroism in the course of their duty.
successful business persons get their reward in their pay packet.
anyone who has made a donation to the party in power should automatically be excluded.

Bern - so are you saying that footballers, actors, actresses etc should not get a gong?
I would suggest that the awards system should recognise and promote the 'best of British' in all respects...business, the arts, sport, charity, politics etc etc... All make their own particular contribution to our lives.
