  The main reason Holland has come through the banking crisis unscathed is because ABN AMRO, their largest bank, was bought by RBS just before the sh1t hit the fan, lumbering British taxpayers with the problem when it went bust.

  The English have traditionally admired the Dutch: at some point in the 17th century, a Spannish fleet of warships was in a British harbour, having been given permission, with some English warships on guard.
  
  The Dutch got wind of it and sent in a fleet that pounded the Spannish ships to the sea-bed. The English sailors from their ships cheered the Dutch on, and of-course it became a great embarassment to the king and Parliament.

  Hindsight is a great thing Peter, banks to blame on that one. Hands down the Dutch have most things right, national pride, active recycling, high tAxes in exchange for a clean country with trains and buses on time, rarely seen homeless people, the elderly and sick looked after, good education with early sex education resulting in rare teenAge pregnancies. It may not be the most favourable idea they have come up with but I admire them for being bold and trying to sort a problem out before the straw breaks the camels back.

  LONDON, April 17— The Dutch Ambassador to Britain flew to the Scilly Isles off the English coast today to proclaim an end to the Netherlands' 335-year state of war with the islands.
  
  Ambassador Jonkheer Huydecoper made the 28-mile journey from the southwest tip of England to the tiny cluster of islands by helicopter, carrying a lavish scroll declaring the state of war terminated.
  
  The islanders have always contended that the Netherlands declared war on the islands in 1651 and never made peace afterward. ''Technically we are still at war,'' said Roy Duncan, a local historian and chairman of the council that governs the 140 islands and their 1,950 people.
  
  ''It has been a joke here for many years,'' he said.
  
  
  
  
  
  Thought this was an interesting bit of history.

  Technically, the war between the Netherlands and the Scilly Islands would have ended when the last war between England and the Netherlands was concluded with a peace treaty towards the end of the 17th century.
  
  That treaty undoubtedly forsaw an end to all hostilities between the Netherlands and any English territory.
  This implied that all forces by land and by sea of the Netherlands and the Scilly Islands were to desist from any further combat.
  
  Manhatten, Haarlem and New Amsterdam became New York, and the Dutch had to stop their raids on Kent, which, although not directed against the civilian population, but rather naval military facilities, were disapproved of by the Kentish people.
  
  It seems that the courage brewary was trading well in those days, when the Dutch raiders stopped over for a pint at Chatham.
