The Dutch who appear to have become more radical and right wing since the EU banned smoking in public places which greatly affected their cannabis cafes are on a collision course with the EU over a threat to deport Poles and other Eastern Europeans who cannot find work. They also want to stop state benefits if they don't speak Dutch.
Brussels fears that other countries experiencing an influx of jobseekers from member states might be tempted to copy the Netherlands' threat, even though such a move would breach EU laws Holland has about 200,000 migrant workers from Eastern Europe. but a million-plus have come to Britain since Eastern European accession to the EU in 2004.
Other EU countries are flaunting regulations at will and so far have only faced reprimands, a slap on the wrist. this country however has followed the rules to the letter.

I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)
It's always the same - we follow the rules to the last full stop and others don't, as they understand that the rules are made in order to bend them. It's the same with procurement and tendering.

I do have some sympathy with the dutch, but do fear even if the UK were to think of taking the same route wouldn't many of the jobs these geezers do on poor pay remain vacant, because UK citizens won't work for that dosh(so even won t work anyay)

Yes, the Dutch have become increasingly concerned, and there is a swing towards national values and interests.
It takes Dutch courage!

There is a swing towards national values in all the more prosperous members of the EU, which will lead to its eventual disintegration.

peter i disagree with the last part of your post.
if europeans are getting proserous then the eu is working.
and thats more than i can say about this contry on the whole.we are getting poorer by the day and constently being ripped of with higer taxes etc.

brian, we are in the e.u.
anyway back to the dutch, the suggestion is that they are breaking the rules by denying benefits to immigrants from member states.
the fact is that they are following the rule that says anyone moving being countries either has to get a job or be able to support themselves.
maybe our politicos might like to look that up too.

Bottom line is there must be a good reason The Netherlands is one of the least affected country in the EU by the recession. They are a very proud of their country and look after themselves.

i think that helen's post got lost in all that.
i didn't know that holland had done so well over the recent crises, what i do know that it was always one of the most over densely populated countries in the world and that large scale immigration has caused even more problems to them than it has to us.
this is evidenced by a rise in right wing support from a population that are renowned for their liberalism and tolerance.
