Some of you may have noticed a gang of young lads working away at the dilapidated hoardings on the corner of Bench Street/Townwall Street. They are students at KCollege who have been commissioned by the Town Team to smarten up a derelict area of town. The students gain experience, the town looks nicer, all paid for by money raised from the market.
As somebody mentioned earlier, localism in action without politicians getting involved

I do hope nobody's nose is to be put out of joint and that permission was sought and was forthcoming from the owners.

If you have nothing sensible to say about the regeneration of Dover its probably best you say nothing at all.
There are people working hard for no reward or personal gain, stupid remarks like yours hardly help.

Little wonder that some can afford Sky TV and holidays in far-flung climes when their responsibilities are covered for free. Just another rich man living off the public dole.
Why was this dilapidation not addressed in the usual way, with the work undertaken by the council and the bill sent to the owner?

I think you know the answer to that.
Re the first statement, how will the owner benefit from an empty building?

Does anyone know if the probate etc has been settled or who the new owners are.
This area should be a prime target for the DDC to either compulsory purchase or get the owners to sort it out.
David, well done to the Town Team but can you tell those of us who seldom get down to that area of town what are the students actually doing.

There must be a benefit or legal requirement to have the hoarding in the first place, and by extension there would be a continued benefit in maintaining the hoarding - for health a safety reasons if nothing else, like security/insurance.
Unless you have used the word 'dilapidated' incorrectly, and what is being done is a more attractive over-painting onto a well maintained, structurally sound and painted hoarding.
But
If repairs and basic maintenance is what is being done then certainly the owner is getting something for nothing.
I recall Rodger was going round the town photographing the sad state of the towns fabric with a view to the council pressing the owners to buck-up.
Why not extend such a thing and have the local youths, languishing on the dole, employed to repaint the whole town, where the owners have not responded to the council's demands, and have the costs passed on to the landlords?
"how will the owner benefit from an empty building?"
Clearly there is not enough of a disincentive to having properties stand idle.

Jan, part of our Portas bid was to recognise that for millions of visitors the first impression of Dover is the derelict buildings we're discussing. Walk from the seafront, drive down the M20 thats what you see. They are renovating the buildings up to 2m in height and decorating tastefully, no life changing thing but a big improvement and real work experience for the students.
I'm afraid I can't comment on what DDC should or shouldn't do, but you can probably guess my view. As usual ordinary citizens have the will and ability to achieve things useless politicians don't or can't.

Dover sea front is superb.Dover behind the sea front is an awful mess.........Dover District Council is impotent...............
DTIZ was `inaugurated`in 1998 /99.............a ``french mayor```would have dealt with the situation years ago................
A step in the right direction is..............................

Finger got stuck on the full stop Reg, or do you doze off at the end of a sentence? Might be best to lay off the medication for a while

Tom I'm surprised at you- most of your postings are the product of pragmatic thinking. If David and co waited for absolute authority it would never be granted.
Go for it localists!

Brian I know your taking the proverbial- but there is no reason why young offenders shouldn't be involved with something like this.

Of course we have permission!
JG sold his holdings way before his untimely death. DDC are the landowner along with a private company.
David has been very restrained on this. He called Kieth a witless individual on another thread. This is now my adopted phrase for the week, there are certainly some witless comments above on here!

It is about time DDC and the nameless private company pulled their proverbial finger out (yet again) and did something with the site.
Visitors see the attractive seafront then hit this eyesore that does nothing to impress, it must make them wonder whether it is worth venturing any further into town.
