There is only the "Bull" pub left in the community toilet scheme now that MacD has closed.

That would be good Keith they reduce the bus services in the afternoons so sometimes a toilet would be handy .

Hopefully all the new stores in St James will provide toilets for the public to use.

Just a reminder of the long march tomorrow, not led by Chairman Mao this time but by pillar of the establishment Councillor John Heron.

Here is your belated answer Brian, we have one group that sees St James as a catalyst while another sees it as a death sentence for the High Street.

I can see there are mixed views, I wonder how this will affect the de Bradelei complex? It might compliment it, then again it might kill it! Who knows....

Not many things that De Bradelei sell that will be sold at St James at time of writing. I can only think of footwear with one retailer selling bottom of the range at St James whilst De Bradelei host a much more up market one. I think De Bradelei will be more interested in what happens to any development connected to DWDR.

"Former Mayor Chris Precious said more independent shops like social supermarket Nifties are needed to give people something "to come and see".
REALLY?

Independent shops yes but who would travel out of their way to visit somewhere that resembles Nifties who not that long ago was threatening to leave the town and move to Thanet.

I think he might be staying for a while as he had a whole new batch of promotional fliers in the Charlton centre, no disrespect to what he is doing I think its great.
But Chris suggesting it would bring in the visitors is deluded. I am sure he meant curiosity of Dover or Turners models but got tongue tied!

I'd be interested to know how many people actually took part in this march apart from those photographed & the 'usual suspects'.
Both Tesco & De Bradlei quiet this morning. Lidl car park buzzing.

Yes the last I read Nifties are staying having negotiated a lower rent. It just seemed strange Chris would promote such a shop, maybe he never uses the establishments you named who are far more likely to attract people to the area than a cheap food shop.

Whilst I applaud John & Sandra for getting off their backsides and making their point, I think they have in some ways missed the point.
Of course it looks like DDC had no plan for the town centre (they might have, but given no-one has seen it...); I do acknowledge the plan for the lower part of town and its connections to the seafront, but this proposal has dragged on almost as long as St James and is not even at the stage of being granted planning - how long do we have to wait for something positive to happen to replace the eyesores that are the old amusement arcade, the demolished Britannia pub, the crypt & a collection of bomb sites off Chapel Lane.
The reality is that most of our shopping area real estate is owned by large(ish) property management companies that do not give a damn about Dover and are not bothered by the odd void in their portfolio. They have escalated estimated property values based on recent auction sale prices and this impacts both rents and business rates adversely resulting in it being even less likely that people will rent the voids. On their own these people will do nothing and do not believe they owe the residents anything.
DDC need to create a Town Centre partnership working with DTC, The Town Team, Destination Dover, resident representatives, property owners etc. to plan, design and fund a town centre makeover that enhances the street scape to encourage its use as a social meeting space, to encourage property owners to separate and convert upper floors into housing, to encourage property owners to refurbish shop units, to encourage through various means (grants, business advice, discretionary rate relief etc) local entrepreneurs to open independent shops, cafes, restaurants, bars etc , to use Destination Dover to get the message out that Dover is a great place etc.

Dear Santa,
please could we have one broad, collaborative and cohesive town centrepartnership. If possible could it be innovative and creative in its approach. We would also like it to have the authority and agency to be able to challenge inertia and to give direction.
All the best,
John.
p.s. I have been a good boy. pps Well almost. ppps Alright, I haven't been, but could we still have this anyway please.

Couldn't agree more John but with so many groups and organisations trying to do things which group would be in overall charge? My fear is the Town Council will empire build.
