20:3829768Vic, The 662 views are not to look at your posts, they are people reading the posts to make sure the forum is not finishing, that is what this thread is about. Not you.
I think the members club still has a lot to offer. would it make it better if it was open as already said but with no false I.Ds.?

21:5729772Ian I agree I also think that we should all use our real names.
I did not mean that 662 was viewing just because of my post,I just think more would talk out against my posts.

22:0429776PaulB's history lesson says quite a lot about how forums evolve over time. Some forums grow like wildfire while others die off fairly quickly - as I found with Dour Forum not so long ago; but it was only meant as a stop-gap while Dover Forum had a rest.
As the days lengthen into Autmn and Winter and users begin spending more time indoors I think the number of postings here will pick up. I've certainly noticed this phenomenon with the biker's forum I run.
I think it would be a shame, therefore, to cull this Member Club area based solely on how often it is posted to in the short term. Even taking into consideration the purile comments from some members the bulk of the postings here are intelligent and informative. We are all capable of ignoring the odd bit of sillyness that creeps in.
While I may not be the most frequent of visitors of late I would hope that the Boss would keep this area alive until such time as it dies a natural death.

09:3529801To put my two pennies worth in, I'm just not the type for posting regularly, I'm just not into writing, don't have the time or the energy, not to mention I am reluctant to express my opinions in writing, in public, on any controversial issues for fear it would affect my job. I am sure I am not alone in all of this. However, when the need or urge arises, it's great to be able to come on here and make a posting or submit something to Paul. Not to mention that I read it nearly every day. If something happens this is the first place I come to find out if others know what's going on, and often they do.
For example, a day of high winds in Dover, I was in Stembrook car park when a tree came down, took a picture and sent it straight to PaulB. Also, when we had the fire at the church in the High Street, again I was able to send my photos in. I see that sort of thing as the contribution that I feel comfortable making, while others like to debate on topical issues etc.
I agree with others that a slow down in posting shouldn't mean the end, but also maybe it is a bit too exclusive, therefore something needs to change, but not end. It would be a sad day for Dover if it ended, it has become an institution of Dover. I'm not just saying that because my husband started it, but because I truly believe it.
Well done Paul!

16:5575309I don't cook many dinners, but counting them up, they are more than a few. But I've made more posts about local regeneration - or joined in on such threads - than I eat hot-dinners. Sometimes I ask the forumites what they think, but it is quite limited as a response. The other evening I had a great converstaion live on the Forum with Pat, enjoyed it, and thought that reciprical views had been exchanged, for people in general to see and contemplate.
But it never really comes to a wider view of many people as not many really join in.

18:2775317thanks for dredging this up colin, i believe that there have been more posts in the year since the thread was started.
what i am certain of is that newer posters have brought in new subjects that were not there before.

08:3975375Amazed this one has resurfaced but now that it has I must do a 'report' on how I see the situation now..
When I wrote the original thread, gosh a whole year ago, I really wasnt sure if these kinds of Forums had a future..dwarfed as were by the massive Facebook and so on. We were like a small old house in Manhattan dwarfed by glass panelled monolithic skyscrapers and the only route to go was to sell up, sell out, and move on.
However since then we have had a hugely successful year, probably the most successful ever. These things cost money to keep going, so if it slumbers and begins to die I would pull the plug. Not for me that familiar route of keeping a near-dead forum open. So as we have NOT had to do that, thanks is due to all the very active members who have contributed marvellously. The more active a member is the better, sleeping members are of little use.
Recently we have had some hiccups with regard to losing a member or two. Always sad and not what we want. But experience tells us that a forum that descends into argument and aggression will die anyway. Postings with an element of consideration for the other guy always lead to better debates and better discussions and here's the vital bit, having a membership that's happy to log on in comfort and enjoy it all. Its all about enjoyment at the end of the day. Without that we're lost.
So if every member wants this to continue to be successful in the same way then keep working at making it so. It is... for the members and by the members.

09:0975383I have been around here for a few years now (10 I believe) and have seen Dover Forum go from strength to strength. Long may that continue. I know I don't live in Dover and therefore can't comment on some topics, but I would certainly miss it and its lovely forumites if it wasn't around. I agree with PaulB about not flogging a dead horse (or dead forum) but I hope it never comes to that. Well done PaulB, Howard and everybody - pat on the back!

09:2775392Thankyou PaulB and Howard, I wish I had found this forum a long time ago and I would miss it if it was to go.

.
I do have one very small complaint though, could certain members please not turn all threads into political ones, think of those of us that do not want politics ALL the time.
You mentioned Facebook, Paul. I joined because I wanted to see what someone looked like on who was on another forum, I saw his picture and I have not visited there since, I don't Twitter either by the way.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

09:3575393It is a good place to be, and I am sad that we have lost a couple of people lately - I hope it's temporary. I have really enjoyed meeting the guys on here even if it is on screen! One of these days I will have the space to meet up in person! There are so many bright people with views that need to be heard - it is inevitable that there are a few clashes and blips. Overall we seem to kiss and make up fine, with support from PaulB. Life's too short to bear a grudge or miss out on people - seeing the view from the other guys eyeline is a good thing, and this forum offers that opportunity nicely.
Thanks all!
