and how much life and business can people get on with in the middle of riotous behaviour?
Seriously having been caught up in a couple of these situations both in the UK and France - you get the hell out of there as quickly as you can if you are not involved.

People believe what they see on tv and become frightened to go out. They should be more sceptical and have more backbone.

Ross, what you have said makes complete sense as per usual.
Who in their right mind would venture onto streets when the mayhem we have seen on the TV is going on.
Why should the vast majority of people have their lives and business ruined by the rioters and looters, when mobile signal blocking might stop the large numbers of thugs that appear when called.
Most businesses have landlines and people did manage to run their lives prior to mobiles, I am sure the vast majority could go without chit chat for a few hours and there are public telephones and neighbours if needs be.

Peter, would you take on that lot that we saw waving large pieces of wood and throwing bricks, blowed if I would and I would not want any of my family to either.

i have been in similar situations, life has to go on, going to work then coming home has to be carried on.
many businesses can only carry on with their mobile phones as evidenced by the many vans going around advertising builders, plumbers, electricians and the like.
there is no point in incurring the extra expense of a landline other than for an internet connection.

Gobsmacking hubris
There is no way to magic extra hordes of rozzers out of thin air, so how do we stop the thugs and lowlifes organising and give the "thin blue line" a chance to do its thing?
Oh no we couldnt possibly inconvenience people already hugely inconvenienced by a riot...

People hide behind their front doors and expect the police to carry out an impossible task on their behalf. Yet the police don't allow the citizenry to assist them for elf and safety reasons. Catch-22 but we need to have people trained and able to back up the police on a voluntary or reserve basis. There are loads of people out there with the courage to take risks in the pursuit of what they think is right but cannot do so.

To put even more pressure on an already overstretched police force, which is what you would be doing as the police would also have to look out for volunteers safety,
is an unworkable situation so me finks

Peter, what would you do then, fight back with some implement of some kind, hands would not be enough, possibly injure a rioter and end up in court charged with GBH. You still think it's worth it, I don't.

I have been down into Hackney this morning, just to see for myself the extent of the damage. I did take a few pictures, but really there is very little to see, certainly by twelve noon when I got there.
The greatest disruption I saw was a bulk-tanker jamming-up the traffic because a shop-front glazier's van was illegally parked at a busy corner.
These 'rogue' van-drivers that think double-yellow lines are only for the mug-punter/law abiding citizen, perhaps they too should be lined-up and shot?
