As everyone probably knows the riots are being covered live on Sky News. My concern is that this publicity attracts the yobs rather than put them off. This is apparent by the number of youths not covering their faces as if they are courting the publicity.
Maybe it's time to review TV live coverage of these sorts of incidents.

But innocent people are being caught up in this marek so we should have a news blackout in hope they the yobs will get bored and go play on thier games consoles? i hardly think it would ease the time bomb up there in all honestly.

quite agree mel, imagine how the victims would feel if their plight was not seen by others.

Perhaps another answer is to suspend twitter etc for the duration.

Watching the news I fail to understand why water canon are not used, filled with a temporary dye to ease identification.

Good point jan but sadly a lot of bystanders would get caught up by it .

that is right would be too indiscriminate, things have got worse with a bus being set on fire in peckham and trouble in lewisham.
looks like things will go london wide very soon.

What do I know?
I walked through there about 12:30 all was normal. I came back to Stoke Newington just after 2pm, again all was normal.
I sit and have a few pints with an old mate...and ... wallop! We are on the tv.
I found the the TV news too eager to talk up the whole thing. IF there has to be 24 hour coverage it should run without commentary. All too soon the news coverage is transmitted through twitter etc. and all we get is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Miles from the 'trouble' they shut the pub I was in. The resulting losses will, no doubt, be put down to 'lawlessness'.
Tripe!!

you are now the forum's official war correspondent, please update us with regular bulletins.
I have friends up there who are in fear and a mate who has hinted this will spread to other places.

If it was known in advance that water canon were to be used there is no reason that the innocent would be caught, the nosey bystanders would all go leaving the rioters and even more importantly the looters covered in dye.

normally you find peacemakers trapped in there, if notice was given about their use, people would go elsewhere.
i don't think they are legal here, i may be wrong.
just had a call that newham is likely to be next, stratford in particular.

It's far more than one or two planks. There are crowds waving to the SkyNews helicopter.
I'm all for the incidents being recorded but transmitted live without editing into front rooms is a different matter. What would happen if there was a fatality witnessed live on tv in millions of homes?
I haven't got the answers nor does anyone else but they need to be asked before something dreadful happens.

the fear is all around up there marek, people trapped on buses whilst windows smashed in etc this is raw life sadly and sadly if no one gets fataly injured at end of it all then it would be a miracle.

Some observations
There is no time bomb - this is disaffected youths, kids on school hols and organised gangs engaging in criminality period.
Dont dress this up as anything other than it is.
Not sure how "innocent bystanders" would get caught by water cannons - if you are not involved get off the street, stay indoors, or go somewhere else, if you are there you are involved.
The media coverage should be aired after the event - not live feeds as this just encourages the numpties to congregate.
Shut down mobile phone cells except for 999 calls - this will stop them organising themselves and staying half a step ahead of plod
"Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today." - James Dean
"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength,
While loving someone deeply gives you courage" - Laozi
people have lives to live ross, shopping to do etc why should they be trapped in own homes? news its what it is why should they change thier ways for the sake of mindless thugs? mobiles again why should mass law abiding people lose thier contact with family etc ???? time bomb it is as not enough police to blanket the trouble and its a threat to grow wider and further.

a couple of obvious flaws, one is as mel has detailed.
mobile phones are the only communication form for some people, they cannot run their personal and/or business lives without them.
