This is rather a refreshing story in todays economic climate regardless of what your politics may be but Gordon Brown ,remember him?.has been paid almost £500,000 since he quit Downing Street a year ago.But unlike former PMs, he has channelled the money into his charity projects and into the running costs of the office he shares with wife Sarah.
However, unlike his predecessors, Mr Brown has ploughed all the £493,620 he has made on top of his £65,738 MP's salary into running his office - or given the money to charity. Mr Brown lists all his outside earnings in the Register of MPs' Interests, writing with every entry: "I am not receiving any money from this engagement personally."
This is in stark contrast to Tony Blair, John Major and Baroness Thatcher who built up multi-million- pound fortunes after leaving No10. Mr Blair and wife Cherie have amassed up to £50million in assets since he stood down in 2007.
Thatcher shamelessly grasped cash from firms such as tobacco giant Philip Morris. But Mr Brown took an unpaid job last week co-ordinating strategy for the World Economic Forum.

My last reading of T. Blair's bags of money and asset-values was 20 million pounds.
Since then, it seems, according to Marek, that this has gone to £50 million.
Apparently he earns his money advising other governments. I would give other governments far better advice: look at what T. Blair did to Britain!

The figure of £20 million is his disclosed earnings but the full extent of his income is cloaked in secrecy because he has constructed a complex web of shadowy companies and partnerships which let him avoid publishing full accounts detailing all the money from his commercial ventures.

Don't think it's refreshing at all, he's used his MP's salary to support himself while raising that money and his profile on the world stage to try to get the IMF job, instead of attending parliament as he should be doing.

Exactly, Gary. GBrown had many faults, but he has always, consistently, been fiscally altruistic and had a social conscience.

gordon didhis best, and like maggie before him his time was up
after 3 labour victories they were on a loser
what was most surprizing was the tories didnt get the majority they expected, worse they are even more unpopular now than in maggies day and that takes some doing
with it has seen cleggy become the most unpopular national politician for some time

spot on keith, impossible to win a fourth consecutive election, voter fatigue sets in.
lord ashcroft blamed negative campaigning from his party for their failure to gain a majority, i tend to agree with that.

Yes Bern - Gordon Brown has always been good at giving away other people's money.
What did almost make me choke with laughter was that comment I just read by Howard. Something on the jury still being out on whether Brown was a good chancellor.
Well just to update you Howard.
The jury returned and pronounced their verdict, the judge solemnly put on a black hat over his wig and sentenced him... never in our history have we had a worse chancellor.

No Gary, I haven't managed to find another MP who has only spoken twice in Parliament in the last year, and used all the time he was being paid to represent his constituents from public money to hole up in Scotland writing a book whose profits went to a private limited company owned by him and his wife.

It would appear that the only 'jury in' is the British Tory selected jury cos Brown, and nobodys perfect, has been made the chairperson of the World Economic Forum. , the WEF said. "It will be an informal group bringing together heads of international organisations and government representatives to analyse, assess and coordinate the prioritisation, development and impact of multistakeholder initiatives within the global system," the group said.
Although the job is advisory and unpaid, it gives Brown an influential role in international policymaking. The WEF brings together high-profile business and political leaders along with intellectuals and journalists in the Swiss resort of Davos every year to discuss urgent global issues
