12:3770091The shop we really need in Dover is a good hardware shop like Wilkinsons.

12:3970092Good News all round for Dover, Greggs and now Brighthouse, its great to see new businesses investing in the town and moving into premises that have been standing empty for some time now

I agree a Wilkinsons or a Toy /Model shop (ready for Christmas). Even a Crockery Kitchenware shop (selling seconds if necessary) wouldn't go astray.

15:0170105I am with you Terry
Brighthouse' web site (
http://brighthouse.co.uk/)describes themselves thus:
"BrightHouse provide an excellent way to get credit - we simply look at your individual circumstances and can arrange credit to suit your needs. Whether you've never applied for credit before or have struggled to be accepted in the past then we can help.
We do this by providing you with the benefits of credit without the traditional strings attached. At BrightHouse you can either pay outright in cash, spread the cost with affordable weekly payments or pay monthly by direct debit. What's more our optional service cover gives you the added benefit of a full service package and the ability to return your product at any time, without penalty. You can even restart your agreement up to 12 months later, and the payments you have made will still count against a product of similar age and specification."

15:1770107So they sell credit......? Cut price, knockdown, ballbreaking, 236-month-easy-repayment, grave-robbing credit?

17:0770128It is very good news that at least Brighthouse will occupy some of our empty shops. The town is desparate for empty shops to be used.
Brighthouse expansion has been in towns with deprevation (Dover not shown as opening soon but opening soon in Ramsagate. They . Interesting to read their website and Wikipedia.
They operate a "buy to rent" retailing activity being the trading name of Caversham Finance Ltd.
Wikipedia quote as under:-
"Customers pay cash upfront, weekly or monthly direct debit with no deposit and no formal credit checks with a charge of 29.9% APR.Customers can take payment holidays and return goods without incuring penalties.
The company's lending practices have been critisised for targeting the "poorest and most desperate families" and operating in the most "deprived areas" of the UK. Example of a Playstation 3 retailing at £299.99 ends up costing £701.48"
It seems being rent to buy goods they can be immediately seized with failure of payments and several complaints have been lodged re this.
Please do not get me wrong, I am not against anyone buying on credit terms but if only people would save to buy so many unfortunate families would not be in the plight they are in today. Also the high level of debt would be reduced.

17:2670133To be honest I personally would rather see a branch of the Church of Satan opening rather than a loan shark - at least with the former everyone is clear what they are getting

18:0870149I suppose it will be Cash Converters next. Dover is becoming an inner city deprived area type of place.
And no, I don't have the answer.

18:2370154That's a shame, I'd heard it was to be a hardware/diy type of business.
Why the need for three shops ? I can't think of anything much more depressing; is that how these companies see Dover ?
The Money Shop that's in the Market Square, had a branch in London Road - is that still operating Terry ?
Why can't we have normal shops as described above - also wet-fish, cheeses, baby clothes, DIY etc.

18:5270155seems a win/win situation to me, three derelict shops turned into one big store selling stuff that we need.
personally i only pay cash, if i cannot afford to buy it on the spot i won't have it.
the high rates of credit that companies like this charge is nothing like the rates that loan sharks levy, and they do not go around breaking peoples legs.

21:5570171We already have shops that sell the things Brighthouse sell, this is not the kind of shop that Dover needs to stop us going out of town.

00:0870192This credit shop has already put one good small firm out of business, the new people in Paynes were very nice and polite and started to do well, now we have lost them to this shop

07:3070203That does seem to be the case Sid.
I don't think it should be ANY kind of shop, why can't we expect better ?
