09:1175385Here I go disagreeing with you again

. I have been to the Duke Of Yorks several times and think it is rubbish, for that kind of meal I find the Plough a lot better.
The carvery on the Sturry to Herne road is excellent value for money, under a £5. It's on the right hand side but can't think of it's name for the life of me (senior moment).

09:1775388Sorry - the Duke of Yorks et al do not present great food by any stretch of the imagination - they present the kind of food I would expect at that price. And that is fine, I don't have to eat there, and they provide a good service for those who want to. There is no substitute for decent food presented well in a good atmosphere, and it is worth the extra few pounds.

11:2675439we will never get agreement in what constitutes a good meal or good value for money.
mark mentions the atmosphere at the "duke of york", funnily enough a couple over the road to me go once a week beacuse they like the atmosphere there, they stopped going to the plough because of the lack of atmosphere.

12:0175449I prefer The Plough to the DoY - the service is better though the food is pretty much the same kind. Neither is a place for a special occasion but for routine eating out they are OK though the last 3 times I was at the DoY the service was dreadful.

12:0675451I have always found the DoY staff are very good at apologising for the dreadful service. Other than that it's ok if you like to eat a good plateful at a reasonable price surrounded by screaming kids.

13:1975457I like the Carpathian, the menu has a Hungarian twist and everything freshly cooked and tasty. Reasonable prices and excellent service once you get past the language barrier.
To those who think £1.50 fair value for a bowl of soup, I would ask: what would you have to pay someone to go and buy the can, open it, heat it, serve it and wash up afterwards? Minimum wage is £5.80.

14:3675473Peter, I agree with you about the Carpathian. Their Ham Egg n'Chips though is not a patch on what you get at lunchtime in a certain Castle Street establishment cooked by yourgoodself!

14:4475475But we charge a lot more for ham, egg & chips than they do, reflecting the greater cost of superior ingredients and the personal touch. Can't be value for money therefore, based on some of the comments above.
PG.

15:5375490i have only used the 'carpathian' for lunch, bearing in mind the ambience, basic good food and service, i would say it is excellent value for money.
i understand they are widening the menu for more hungarian dishes in the evening.

20:2275518Haven't had a meal at The Allotment yet, but have certainly enjoyed many meals at The Railway Bell, good quality food and very affordable.

My son and daughter-in-law took me for a meal at the Swingate at lunchtime. This is the first time I have been there for years because my previous meal there was not very good.
Today I have nothing but praise, good food with very friendly service in a nice atmosphere and I will certainly return.
