Usual story, publican makes a success of a pub and landlord/brewery get greedy and want a bigger share?

does sound like scenario that ray describes.
rab runs a very successful pub as is seen by the people outside on a pleasant day.
if it is true about the rent then it is mind blowing that a brewery would take a chance on being left with an empty pub in times when they are closing by the day.

i thought that they had sorted the noise issue out a long time ago.
a new sound system had been installed that met all guidelines.

Well I do not drink but I am very sorry to see it go,years ago Dover was well known because of its pubs one for each day of the year.I do think it would help if they could smoke again in doors in one bar for smokes only.

Terry, what are 'winklers' I asked myself. So, here are a few locals from 2008...

It used to be my local years ago but no loud music in those days only a singsong around the old upright piano stuck in the corner and my old shipmate Reg Tipton playing his heart away. Reg could play anything you asked him, he could play with a fag stuck in his hand and every one sent a drink over to him in appreciation. He had them all lined up on top of the old Joanna, usually a small rum and at closing time he had to get them down him.
I don't go in there as much these days, only when I have missed the Whitfield bus, but I know Rab and Theresa, mine hosts. They have raised lots of money for charity with their Pub Walk and the Winkle club.
It would be a shame to see it closed down as it has been there since 1846 and probably longer according to the "Pubs of Dover" web site.

Alec
Do you remember old Vic, a steward on the FE1 and his wife, Iris. They used to frequent the GL before making their way to Harrys Key Club in the old Metropole Bdg. He drank a boiler maker..scotch and half pint bitter chaser and she (daubed in Kathy Kirby style lipstick) quaffed nothing but bottled Guinness?

Marek,
I knew them well, after Vic passed away Iris always used Harry's club in the afternoons and sat next to the window facing St. Mary's church and as you say always drank bottled Guiness.
That was my favourite drink when i first arrived in Dover and I was nick named "Alec Guiness". Happy days.

My key number was 14. A great place with Paddy and Melda behind the bar.

Sadly both passed away now Marek.

I was never a key holder but my mate, Pat Doyle, was a member and I used to go in with him. You probably knew him.
Paddy was from Manchester (Trafford Park) via Ireland and was quite knowledgable about the Manchester scene. They finished up in the Gateway flats.
