Excellent and interesting posts above, with no holy war.

Indeed so, Colin. Despite the obviously inflammatory start.
True friends stab you in the front.

Exactly Andy, which is why I must count to 1000 before I decide to comment on such sensitive topics.

But what a good conversation it prompted!! Lovely!

I`ve said on here before that I do listen sometimes to Brian Darcy`s Sunday half hour at 8.30pm on BBC radio 2. You don`t have to be religious to listen or enjoy it. An item he mentioned made me think last night. He said in his own words that, "God knows whatever you`re going to say before you say it". Never heard that before. Do statements like this help religion in its cause? (Just a freindly question to all my readers).

Well, if it's true, why does the Church insist on holding prayers and prayer meetings?

I pray most nights and sometimes in the day time even fall asheep praying. What am I doing? I am talking to God on a one to one. I do alot more talking to God at home then in Church.
GOD: 0
DARWIN: 1
That score hasn't changed yet...

If God is omnisicent, then yes, he will know what you are going to say - and what you are thinking, and where you will end up, and a trillion million magnazillion other things beside.
There are lots of reasons for prayer. one is that it works. That may not necessarily be in the way we envisaged, though.
For atrocities over the past 2,000 years, I'd suggest that humans may have had a hand in there somewhere. If so, then maybe it's our own attitudes and actions we should consider first.
Questions like this are interesting, but one thing I'd rather think about is a faith like Vic's. What brought him to it? How does he know it is true? I'm NOT asking you to answer this, Vic! Instead I'm suggesting that if one is seeking some insights or even answers, an alternative place to start could be thinking about these things and why someone might have this sort of faith.

Maggie, nice to here from you ,I will have to get back on this one we are just going out thank you.
We all need something to believe in, or what's the point? Since time began people have had to find a reason for things that happen - rainstorms, thunder, crops failing, even death. Since then there have always been "gods". There is evidence that even in mesolithic times people were erecting monuments as ritual sites.
If there is a God, he is the same for all, whatever he is called and whoever worships him.
Having a God gives a framework to living what might be termed a good (as opposed to bad) life.

Speaking for myself I get great comfort from my beliefs. As Diana says, we all need something to believe in and I believe in God. I don't push my opinions on anyone else, I don't go to church and I don't get involved in other people's beliefs.
Like Vic I pray and I believe that helps me through bad times. No-one should ever make snidy comments about a persons faith, it is no-one elses business.
Being a christian is more about how you live your life than what you believe in.
OK that's my bit!!
Hey Vic, we agree again - this is getting regular

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".
Faith should not have to be proved or disproved . We are all entitled to believe in whoever we want , but if the great one is looking down please let England win the world cup .

I`d like to ask him why I only get one lottery number a week, whereas, some individuals seem to get six. They must pray harder than me I suspect.
