On Howard`s museum Summer opening times thread, Vic refers to Sunday as God`s day when shop`s should be closed. Not criticising that, or religion in general, as we`ve had a bit of that on here. I know there are deeply religious and church going member`s on here, and all very intelligent people, but I still can`t get my head round why the subject of this topic is still believed in, despite the atrocities of the last 2000 year`s, continuing today, and will be continuing into the future. Someone nobody has ever seen, someone only known from numerous writing`s from over the centuries. Why does there have to be a God? What are the main reason`s for believing?

I am stepping away from this one very carefully...............

Bern, I just had to laugh when I posted this, as you had appeared and just done a post with the remark `Amen to that`on another thread. Nothing argumentative here, I just saw Vic`s comment and made me come up with this. I`m a reformed character on here now, but I still like to ask this big question, and I`m always interested in other member`s views, without the slagging off.

I know God is there for all of us, you only need to turn to him,I have said this many times over the years. I will never get to to the holy place, because I am not that good. But it is there and God is to,our son is there, all I aske is to see and hear him and my family once more.Thank you.I like to talk to God and also about him and over the years he has been a great help, but I have let him down many times but he is still there for all of us,and it is not till we die that we fine out if we get to the holy land, but again I will not get there.

Thank you Vic, and I think you have a very long way to go to catch up with even the mildest sinner`s on this planet. There are many who don`t deserve a life.

as far as i know there is not a religion that says "god" will intervene in anything.
the general idea is that we behave as human beings i.e. nut cases and the less evil of us get some sort of promotion when we die.
if he/she did stop all the bad things, life would be incredibly boring and would have no point to it.
crudely put but fairly accurate.
there have always been gods since the dawn of time, always will be.
some societies try to stamp out religion, but it is part of the human psyche and will not go away.

Colin.
Try going fishing with your brother in-law and you can ponder all of these things on the bank side
No matter how many postings this brings.....you won't get an answer for what you need to know..

Actually Ian, I pondered the topic as soon as I`d posted it, with tongue in cheek. Like TV, I should avoid religious remarks on here as it start`s me off. As for fishing, I just haven`t got the patience.

Howard. I gave you the answer.God is there, and at this time is looking down on this post.He likes to see all of us talking about him.
As Dave Allen used to say: may your God go with you. And that is a clue - Your God.
I will now shut up!

THIS is a very deep subject one I have approached from a diffrent angle.
Like others on here I was dragged (sorry raised) through the catholic system, attending St Pauls primary(now closed) St Richards(formerly St ursula's all girls school) St Edmunds.
In that time the majority of teachers were nuns.
Taking aside recent findings of priests wrong doing with children, I can only say in my time in the schools i witnessed many things that would indicate to me that those nuns involved could not be christian.
The only replies in conversation I have ever had from leading lights of the church is that "well thats human error"
Well ok, but you have to see what that has done to many people, like me who have gone through this system.
Probably best example is my brother has now become a humanist, and strongly supports the humanists principles. Thats because of what he has seen.
I will not again go over all the terrible things I witnessed in the name of christianity?
For me, I hope there is a God out there that will at some point guide and look after me, I continue to have a belief.
But you can understand with these continued bad publicity on people we should be able to trust, for a lot of people it does become hard.

I hope most, If not all of my postings are good
ooooooooooooooook. Just this once then: I have a faith, but that doesn't stop me asking questions and having pockets of ambiguity (they can be sewn into any suit if you ask the tailor nicely). Jesus, the fella who was the catalyst for Christianity (the clue is in the title) was a historical fact, although the myths and legends that were created despite him are less reliable. He was, given the more reliable writings about him, a real moral philosopher with insights and the ability or even the need to challenge politicians. This led to his death, without a doubt. The whole Son of God thing becomes more complex - I will simply say that his very refusal to accept that title gives it credibility, and actually confirms us all as Gods creation (and that includes the science bit - science and God are not mutually exclusive, quite the contrary) in a real and meaningful sense. I could go on, but I would just have rocks thrown at me!!!!! I would, though, encourgae anyone to read about Biblical times with an open mind and not with a religious view - fascinating and absorbing historically, and often leading to more questions!!
