  You may well be right Barry that the majority of the "Establishment" - the media in general and all 3 (main) political parties, will put a pro-EU stance forward and attempt to frighten the British public into thinking that we in fact, are better off within than without the EU.
  
  As no one believes the Political parties any longer, at least on a National level, that shouldn't present too much of a problem, because if they say stay in, people will know they are lying and so vote to come out.
  
  Who believes what they read in the newspaper anymore ?
  
  So that just leaves the TV news reporting; I understand they cannot be politically biased, although that isn't always obvious of course.
  
  Simplistic it is true and it may be a risky way to determine our future, but at the end of the day, it should be OUR decision.
  
  I cannot see what benefit it is doing to us remaining in the EU, the cost alone is crippling us; we will still continue to trade (the original reason why the majority of the British public voted to stay in) as we probably import more from the EU countries than we export and I cannot see that the rest of Europe will gang up and bring about a war against us, so that argument is a non-starter too.
  
  There is the whole of the rest of the world to trade with and our manufacturing companies are always looking for new markets.

  I totally agree Roger - there is a whole wide world to trade with as well as the EU and, Howard - so right..... They will not want to cut their own throats.
  
  None of this will stop a furious and well fund campaign to intimidate and scare people into voting to stay in, fear of the unknown is powerful. Offering an alternative such as a Swiss style arrangement is a different matter and likely to be more electorally successful.

  Particularly strange view, considering Switzerland is not - and has never been - a member of the EU, Barry.
  For Britain to have a relationship with the European Union such as Switzerland has, we'd have to first leave the EU anyway.
  
  It's a forgone conclusion that an in/out referendum would never have, nor imply, as an option, an end to trade with European countries.

  Well let's hope this awful EU thing will be out of the way soon, Barry.
  For one, I fully support trade and cultural relations with Western Europe, such as Britain and France having a mutual defence policy, providing it isn't an interventionist policy.
  
  Switzerland is a great country, with democratic principles, and the Dutch are renowned for their courage.

  " Timothy Garton Ash advocates the UK waiting inertly in the wings before holding a referendum on whether to quit or remain in the worsening social and economic shambles that is austerity Europe, something he deems necessary to save the eurozone a la Merkel (Comment, 20 December). Not surprisingly, public support for this kind of EU is tumbling and in response there is the beginning of discussions about changing the direction of the continent. The damaging single market, with its open borders for goods, money and people, allowed German banks to lend to Greeks to import German cars they couldn't afford, and pensioners and the less well off are now being made to pay. The flow of people is increasing tensions across the continent.
  
  The alternative is for Europe to become a co-operative grouping of countries that provides a secure future for its people. Cross-border issues such as climate change, pollution and crime require intra-European co-operation, but the flow of goods, money and people must be slowed dramatically to enable nations to take back control of their future and protect their citizens.
  
  If this is thought too radical a debate for Westminster politicians, then they should consider the election implications of recent polling showing that immigration is a bigger cause for people voting Ukip than arcane discussions about European governance. Nigel Farage must be licking his lips in anticipation of countless Labour as well as Conservative voters flocking to Ukip every time he claims that 27 million Bulgarians and Romanians can in 2014 come to the UK to work, claim benefits and use the NHS.
  
  So when discussing an in/out referendum, let's have a debate as soon as possible about what treaty changes will allow all European countries to regain control of the movement of money, goods and people across their borders. The alternative is likely to be an insecure population, ever more susceptible to the lure of the extreme right; the strutting fascists in Athens should be a warning to us all.
