Great snippets of information you have uncovered Kath, really interesting reading. I wonder what happened to the bound copies of 'The Illustrated London News' which my Great Grandfather passed down. Last time I saw them was when my Dad caught me strapping them to my roller skates to use as an early skateboard.
I was smarting for a few days lol!

The Annual Manoeuvres made amazing write ups - I think one of the biggest was in the 1860s when there were tens of thousands of men on the land and ships

looking at post 43 it seems that dover was a battleground between the reds and the blues.
