listening to the news today it seems that the french parliament is about to implement a ban on wearing any sort of face coverings in public.
a fine of 150 euros for those flouting the ban.
the muslim council of france is against the ban but says that it does not actually support the wearing of one.

I really don't mind if Muslim women wear burkas, it's part of their culture.

The problem is not the burka but the 'misuse' of the burka by male terrorists posing as women. The other factor is how to establish their identity through just a peep hole and finally ,I suppose, is the fact they are living in the West and therefore should adopt our ways just as my wife when in Saudi had to adopt their ways and had to wear the full burka at all times and could not travel outdoors without one of the Prince's bodyguards acting as a chaperone.
As my old friend Croc would say.."when in Rome..."

Are we discussing semantics here,or is this another facet of rabid Islamaphobia.
Exactly - it's a respect-the-culture type thing. Also, I wonder if any right-minded countries would accept women from an alternative culture having to wear chains or gags in public? And don't give me that womens-right-to-choose to wear the bhurka stuff - if you are brought up or taught to do something that becomes the norm and it is difficult to see how oppressive it can be. I speak as a Catholic............who has faith but challenges doctrine.
Bern, I think it's a bit regressive to expect women to wear their sink-chains when out doing the family shopping. I'm surprised you raised it.
John, we're discussing the workings of a secular state and wondering why we cannot follow suit.

Thats why i use the term semantics Sid,what ever the French decide to do it will be in the interest of France. As a nation France believes that cultural aspects should reflect the French identity.Could you imagine Britain, rightly or wrongly, taking such a course of action.

Sorry Sid, my chains got a bit tight and I had a lack of blood to the head for a minute and forgot my place............
Not in my lifetime John, as we have had our identity emasculated for the last 13 years, almost to the point of making genuine Brits feel guilty about their nationhood and race.
It would be easier to get us all to wear the burkha as that would presumably assuage the anger of an important minority.
According to a report out today, ethnic minorities are about to account for 25% of our population. In my book they will cease to be ethnic minorities when we reach that point. As each day passes we get closer to the slated vision of Enoch Powell.
"About to" as in a few decades. "Our" identity has changed so often it is difficult to keep up - Vikings, the French (pauses to spit), the Romans, the French, the Germans, the French........................ I guess that is what constitutes an identity - something that reflects who we are right now factoring in all the variables (goddammit there I go again...)

'I really don't mind if Muslim women wear burkas, it's part of their culture.'
Well that's alright then. Along with genital mutilation, stoning people to death etc. etc.
Exactly! (Breathe...breathe....)

great to see so many replies, bob go to the back of the class.
only 1900 women wear the garment in france, just the principle of the matter.
in my view france has got it right(belgium too) the host culture must prevail.

It's already banned in Belgium!
According to something I was listening to on the radio yesterday there is nothing in the Koran to say that women must be fully covered, likewise there is nothing in there to say that Muslim men must never cut their hair.
I think France has the right idea for a change. Mulitculturalism is about tolerating other cultures but it's about time some of these other cultures began torlerating ours too.
