As most of you know I'm involved in staging the Dover tattoo next year
http://www.dovertattoo.org.uk/
I'm looking for an assistant next Monday morning at about 10 o'clock to help with a bit tape measuring. It will literally be holding on to the end of a long tape measure while I log lamp posts etc onto a ground plan. Not very exciting I know but at least you would get to have a close look at this Napoleonic fortification.
Don't all rush at once.

Sorry to nit-pick but Fort Burgoyne is not Napoleonic. It was one of the many built during the mid C19 and known as "Palmerston's Follies".
I don't know if it's been changed recently but a DHB press release describes the Marine Station as Victorian - when in fact work started in the year of the death of Edward V11 and completed inthe reign of George V.

I made a little video about Fort Burgoyne back in 2007:

A Sean Bean film about a fictional commando operation called Age of Heroes was filmed there a couple of years ago and can be picked up for about a fiver. It's so-so and quite predictable but worth watching for early training scenes filmed on the parade ground.

Well done, you lads. Why am I not sensible enough to live in Dover?
I'd have loved to have been there too, and would happily have held on to Terry's end for ages.
... um, hang on ...

... what I meant was ...

Why are they called the "Napoleonic" defences anyway? Does that mean that they should by the Hitleric Wartime Tunnels under the Castle?
Been nice knowing you :)

Thanks Phil.
Quite a large parade ground and the brickwork looks in pretty good order, considering it's between 130 and 150 years old. Quite overgrown though.
I appreciate that video was made four years ago, but is it more overgrown now or has it been cleared by the WHPS and WCCP volunteers ?

The moat that can be seen from the connecting bridge has been cleared in the past few weeks. I assume that this has been done by HCA contractors. I'll get a few pictures when we're up there on Monday. I was up there with the fireworks contractor last week and apart from an odd tree access round the top is quite clear.

A couple of pictures from the bridge showing how the moat has been cleared. Six weeks ago this was totally overgrown and you had no idea where the bottom was. I did consider dropping my long tape measure down to see how deep it was but it was too windy.
Thanks to Vic for helping. Sadly Alan was unwell and couldn't make it.
