Dover Castle is known as a flag station for the nation, it is bound by home office rules and regs to fly the union flag from the highest point(normally the flag mast atop the keep) for 24 hours a day. These rules were applied shortly after the death of Princess Diana. Prior to this the flag was raised at dawn and lowered at dusk, by the castles security staff. Now the custodians on duty in the keep take care of it, they have a large selection of flags, different sizes for different weather conditions and they keep the flag aloft at all times unless told otherwise by the home office. Constables tower flys the deputy constables flag, the EH flag flys from Palace gate, and both the port war signal station mast and the church mast are empty. Taking care of the flag is just a small part of normal duties in the keep, and I have raised, lowered, changed and dipped flags more times then I care to remember, just why our mayor thinks that raiseing a flag will cost almost 4 grand a year is beyond me!

Interesting reading Ray .DDC have a list as to when the union flag is flown..The flags at DDC offices are raised at dawn and lowered at dusk by a caretaker.Flags get very worn and in high winds get damaged. The flagpole at the Town Hall which was damaged last year cost. a tidy sum to be replaced.

You don't have to go far to see the differences in national attitude and, probably, the size of the purse strings. In France it seems most memorials, civic and public buildings sport a tricolore and any other EU and regional flag they can find. Examples being:-
The War Memorial in Calais
The Mairie at Boulogne's Haut Ville - overlooking that wonderfully crazy car display.
The Museum at Lille - there are about a dozen tricolores in this shot alone.

For years Dovorians have been happy for the flag to be flown on certain occasions, but now because someone from across the pond and now resides in Dover, wants the flag to be flown because that is done where she comes from, we must do the same, why do we in this country have to copy or be told what we can or can't do, once upon a time the country made up its own mind.

Mrs Amos I agree with you Dover does fly the flag each day anyway no need for the DTC to do it.

Sheila - "why do we in this country have to copy or be told what we can or can't do, once upon a time the country made up its own mind".
Obsolutely agree and well said for saying so. Presumably you'll be voting Conservative at next year's election, so we can have a referendum and decide the future for our Country and for ourselves.

The Labour Group at DDC have proposed flying the EU flag alongside the Union Jack.
More good news for my lot, the electorate aren't as stupid as the people elected to serve them.

Brian's right in that we are and always have been European, the political thing is another issue.
If that is true about the reds wanting to fly an EU flag then it is purely a party political stunt and the vote will be along party lines as ever.

Stunt or not it will backfire. The majority of people in Dover are anti EU, I can state that with complete confidence.

Brian, the majority can see the connection between the two.

But Brian, it's only becaus we are in the EU that we can't control immigration.
That proposal wasn't put to the Council at the last Full Council meeting last Wednesday; they did put forward a motion that the Council should support membership of the EU - which, naturally having a Conservative-led DDC was soundly beaten - and so were their arguments (such as they were).
It's an absolute pleasure to watch and listen to Paul Watkins demolish and destroy every one of their suggestions (whatever the subject), so completely.
It'll be a sad day for Dover (District) when Paul eventually does stand down, which I hope won't be for many years yet.

What an extraordinary subject to be discussed at a district council meeting, don't we have enough problems to sort locally?
This is the problem when political parties play games like this, the public are even less enthused.
