O.K. Paul - maybe they were on a break (holiday) when we went.

I'd thoroughly recommend Scoops at the bottom of Tower Hamlets. Everything's cooked to order and any leftover chips are thrown away rather than being left in the hot box. I'll say it's the best fish and chip shop in town.
Having sampled The Smokehouse I'm very surprised it's listed as No 13. Their presentation is nice but, having inferior (ie not Heinz) tomato ketchup really spoils the experience. At £2 you'd expect they'd give you the best ketchup. Their chips (cooked in beef dripping) are also a disappointment if you're expecting to be served "real" chips, not "chips" supplied from a cash and carry.
The Dovorian. cooked to order no skin on the fish chips golden brown and no waste. did try castle street once but when they had not heard about putting gravy or curry source over the chips did not go again

It was an eye opener for me when I was working with some chaps from 'op north' last year, gravy with everything! I tried gravy 'ont chips and it's not bad

I have a northern friend who won't eat curry without chips.

Barry - Grimsby people, especially the fishermen, traditionally, have for decades served Faroe Bank Haddock with a rich onion gravy, it is not a recent whim !
