The Times today lists the 30 top places for fish & chips in the UK.
At No. 1 is the Lifeboat House at Helston in Cornwall.
Coming in at No. 3 is the Middle Street Fish Bar in Deal where "the chips are crispy outside and fluffy inside with the batter light, crisp and non-greasy". Well done chaps!
At No.7 is the Whitstable Oyster Company where the eat-in price for fish, chips and mushy peas is £19.50!
Closer to home at No 13 is the Smokehouse in Folkestone where the "beautifully cooked" fish and chips is "well priced" at £7.50.
Tony's is quite good too and you don't have to go so far!

Hi Terry anything from Whitby in there,as Whitby claims it has the best fish and chips.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
Tonys is near the traffic lights at the junction on London Road just before the turning to Buckland Hospital, sort of opposite the TAs. Nice chips, good fish! Another decent one is in Castle Street near Blakes - nice mushy pea fritters - my favourite!!

We always use the one in London Road near Ladywell opposite the burnt out old church. They have changed the name from Pips but have no idea what it is called now.

Thanks Terry I was told to visit Mr Chips in Whitby and it wasnt as good as the one by the bridge. My favourite in Dover is in Cherry Tree. By the way in Whitby Cod and Chips cost you over £5 infact with mushy peas for 2 it was £12.40!
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
I forgot the one in Cherry Tree! It's been a while but their chips were nice, and a decent portion.
Definitely hungry now!!

We have not been lately to the Middle Street Fish Bar in Deal but must go again soon, our neighbours go quite often and are always talking about how good the meals are.

Bern I agree with you on the one in Cherry Tree - nice fresh fish n chips in good portions served by a lovely friendly lady and two lots for less than £8 - very nice
Have to admit that after a day out sailing we had a great Chinese meal from the wonderful Lisa at The Oasis in Elms Vale tonight. That take away is fantastic - would recommend it to anyone

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

The Middle Street Fish Bar or Skardons as it is known has never let it's standards drop in all the years I have known it, top class.

There are some good fish and chip shops in Dover, in recent times I have found Davittos (?) by the paper mill really good. Run by an Irish guy, cooked to order which I think is the measure of a good chippy. The Irish make great fish and chips for some reason, Leo Burdocks in Dublin being a fine example, my Dad still to this day rates this as one of the best he's had.
I used to work in what was Pip's, peeling spuds, it was my first job at 14 and I used to stink. My mum made me shower the second I got home everyday. Good fish and chips, the best made by Janet who still lives round the corner in Dour Street.
In the last year me and Dad have come to the conclusion Middle street is the best around, before that we used to go to the Little chip shop in Sandgate and before that even down to Dungeness to the Pilot, which in recent years has gone downhill!
Martin is right, Middle Street is consistently good. Take away cod and chips £4.50, eat in about £7. It is amazing, family run and always cooked to order. It is well worth a visit although you will find a queue down the street on a friday evening.

I understood that the Middle Street fish and chip shop had changed hands in the last couple of years ?
Jean and I went their last year I think and their dining room had changed style and the fish was smaller than usual and of course more expensive.
Roger
Tonys for us but we do also like to go and sit down and have some fish and chips or something else off the menu at The Dovorian.
