Just a reminder not to forget to feed the birds and provide them with water.
Have a look in our cupboards - you can put outdry porridge oats, raisins and other dried fruits, sunflower seeds, peanuts, grated cheese (robins love this), etc etc.
Just seen a small hawk (which one?) which has taken a blackbird off our patio and is devouring it in front of us!
Can someone identify it for me please?

water is the most important thing while their normal sources are iced up, i did read that bacon rind was good for them in this weather.

I put goodies out for the birds this morning but it is all covered in snow now, I will have to brush if off when the snow eventually stops.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

My Favorite of the english raptors! This, Kath, is almost certainly a very hungry Kestrel. These would normally feed on voles, mice and earth worms and carrion but will, at need, take smaller birds. For over 20 years I faithfully recorded a Kestrel nest site at the castle and have seen tham take all sorts of prey. Take a look on my web site (address below), go to galleries - Kestrels to see more.
Hope this helps. By the way, it is a young Kestrel, photographed on the day if fledged, by my name, young Kestrels are often called Tercels, and they belong to the Falcon family.

Our main feeding station has 6 different food types, the black sunflower hearts from Tesco go down a storm, saw the little fellow on top of our washing post, a grab shot taken through a window during snow fall!

Just dug these from my files and thought that some of you may like to see them, these are some of the Kestrels that I have been monitoring for some 20 years or more.

Come come now Howard, a little 'touched' perhaps, but no more than that.
