A Matter of Life and Death is, I think, even better than It's a Wonderful Life. The opening conversation when he is expecting to die shows a positive attitude we could all aspire to.
I once met Ann Bancroft, and her husband Mel Brooks, and it took all my willpower not to call her Mrs Robinson.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

have to resurrect this after watching a film on the film 4 channel last evening.
apparently it won awards but i had never heard of it and hopped channels on the off chance of something capturing my limited attention span.
this one done the trick, great story and script, superb acting and totally hypnotic.

Howard PaulB told me about this film ages ago, so when it came on again I sat and watched it and you are right it was an excellent film.

an eclectic mix keith. the last one was excellent on visuals but i couldn't fathom the plot line.
glad i am not alone jan, that was a film that would win awards but never do well at the box office.
not often a film grips me like "the reader" did.

Shawshank Redemption is a classic, another couple of excellent films The Pianist and The Illusionist, lighter but not to be missed is Saving Grace.
Lastly for those of us that have yet to grow up the Ice Age and Shrek films and one that pleasantly surprised me Elton John's Gnomeo and Juliet.

We saw The Reader a while ago on TV - a Sky channel I believe; an excellant film and I remember it coming out, but because Jean doesn't do cinemas (too loud), we waited for Sky and it was well worth it.

Roger, I do not do cinemas either for exactly the same reason. I resolved that if I ever went again I would have to use earplugs rather than having to sit with fingers in my ears, surely the level must damage the hearing of cinema goers and staff.

My father always took cotton wool to the cinema to stuff into his ears when going to see a film !

Earplugs or cotton wool, I guess they'd both work, but you're right Jan it does damage ears/hearing.

Lady's do suffer more from deafness; apparently they are over exposed to noise .

Thank you Howard. The Reader was a decent piece of cinematography, and an involving story.

Oh, I see. I'm heartless, eh?
Touching, is about as intense as it got for me.
