09:4669298that increases my doubts about the profitability of the price cutting by eurotunnel.
p and o have the financial muscle to match them with discounts for as long as it takes, where will eurotunnel be then?

00:0369426Howard, P&O do not have that financial muscle, and are in serious financial difficulties!

00:1469430Not true Alexander. They have massive reserves, but as always, enjopy an annual cull to boost profits further. The comapny has no sense of belonging to a community or loyalty to its workforce.
It was just the same in the P&O Normandy Ferries days. Some things don't change, and culture is one of them.
Some years ago I met a consultant who was hired to help the company senior management change the way they behaved towards the workforce etc. He was quite offended when I burst out laughing and told him it was a sham. Less than 18 months later we met up again and he confessed I was right.
You see the real problem wasn't a need for culture change, it was a need for the top brass to respect those who they were responsible for, and respect for their team is one thing they will never have.

14:4469507Well Howard, I wonder what I read in the papers the other day that seemed to imply the contrary! I thought I read that they were in financial dificulties, at least in Dover.
But let's leave Dubai in the Persian Golf and keep to Dover's P&O! They do seem to have a problem with the low cost of tickets owing to competitivity from the Channel Tunnel.

17:1969525It is fair that Seafrance is subsadised. They run a service for people, so the French government does well in subsadising the company when they are in financial difficulties.
Otherwise they would have to lay off many workers, and possibly close down.
The French government does keep to at least a part of the former social achievements of the French society, and I suppose the payment of motowway and Alpine tun

nel tolls in France makes this all the more possible.

17:4469534it is against european competition laws, i see that some more money has been poured into them again as they reach the later stages of being in administration.

10:5169705Neither the ferries or eurutnnnel are perfect last winter they both had problems with weather , they both have money problems an to a lesser extent they are both competing with lo cost air travel , the difference is the goverment wont let eurutunnel fail , but only the strongest of the ferry companys will survive , so Sid i do feel for the ferry companys .

Sealink was the only part of British railways that made a profit.
