Is that the school outfitters Howard. I take it that it is. Always very sad to see companies of long standing closing down. I suspect nowadays what with the supermarkets selling school clothing that it must be very difficult for companies like this to survive. The fluctuations of commerce and market forces, but nevertheless sad to see.
I wonder how long they have been there?? anyone know? I seem to remember buying my little fan heater in Market Sq from a company situated in the same spot, bought it from a company called LEB. I was here a wet day then.

that's the one paul and i would imagine that the school uniform issue would have been one of the main reasons they closed.
other things like merchant navy uniforms and chef's get up would hardly be jumping off the shelves on a regular basis.
they sold sporting equipment but their purchasing power would have been minimal compared to jjb and jd sports.

Administrators told the staff in Dover yesterday. The firm shut its Ramsgate shop in January. Staff still waiting for promised redundancy payments, looks like they won't get that now

Oh dear! that's a shame about their redundancy. These are very difficult economic times as we know and redundancy can get you through those difficult times in the short term anyway. Grim to be without a job in Dover..we are not exactly awash with opportunity.

It appears from talking to other outfitters than schools have found alternative cheaper suppliers

Another big hole in our High Street. At one time we were doing well, with quite a few shops opening; as with the others that have closed, it has nothing to do with Dover, but outside forces.
The school-uniform supply was possibly a factor as a (non-local) preferred supplier was appointed even though local companies could supply better quality and cheaper. I know Peter Drew (of Phillips and Drew) tried for quite a while to argue their case, but the decision was made; Peter's shop closed down (and he opened up ShuuZ (?) in London Road. Now this one.
Something exciting and vibrant needs to go there to draw people to the Market Square, but it's a big shop-space to fill. Great location for a Visitor Information Centre (it's O.K. I know it is moving across the way from there).
I hope it is left in a presentable state when it closes.

Sad to see another shop close down and in Market Square too leaving another empty place there. I can't imagne how they survived. I remember assuming that was where I would go for my girls Dover Grammar uniforms, local uniform shop for local school, but alas no. We had to go to Faversham to a specialist shop to purchase all their kit and it was so expensive too. Such a shame that the contract was not with a local Dover shop, makes no sense to me

We too had to go to Faversham - 3 times! Three girls at the Girls Grammar and one boy at the Boys Grammar. Not a cheap time! Only one left in school now thank goodness!

It does beg the question (about school uniforms) why was it allowed to be set up like that ? Two local businesses lost out big time becuaee of it and a lot of parents too.
Questions in the House (but which house - Westminster or County Hall ?)

It doesn't sound very "free" to me Keith.
Roger
If I am honest, the quality of the uniforms was not great either - expensive, and quite a bit of polyester going on. (Not the shop in Dover I hasten to add!)

peter;
I'm trying to play nicely, lol

but a policy that promotes such practice and supported by the poster has an effect doesn't it?

Keith I don't think any party has a policy of encouraging a private monopoly; Labour wouldn't support it because it's private and the Tories wouldn't because it's a monopoly supplier. Sounds like simple poor management at the school to me.
